Corsa C Ute - Another Toy Story

Ok so things have been a bit busy my side, haven't had much time to spend on the Ute. I gave it a good detail a couple of weeks ago - clay bar, polish and wax. Had to get all the overspray off from when it was at the panelbeaters. It came out nicely. Next time I give it a wash, I'll take some pics.

Then earlier this week, I got the windscreen replaced, and also fitted the new cowl panel by the wipers, so the Ute is looking good again.

Late yesterday afternoon, I decided it's time to do the turbo swap. The Ute has been smoking a lot more recently, so I decided to give it a bash. Everything has gone smoothly so far. What I managed to get done yesterday was remove the turbo, strip the water and oil lines off the LET turbo, and clean up these pipes, along with the face of the head. Tonight I'll pick up where I left off, and hopefully get the new turbo fitted.

Here are some pics:

Pic of the turbo removed, and the head studs removed:

So as you can see, it's fueling lekker, lots of soot in there :D

Then I just had a quick look at the LET manifold, but I haven't seen any noticeable cracks anywhere - so that's a good thing. Here's a pic of the actuator flap:

I'll take some more pics as fitment progresses....

Ok so on Friday evening, I completed the fitment of the VXR turbo.

Before I did that, I had to make some minor mods to the front mount, as the downpipe was still touching on it when under partial load - very annoying. So in the pic below you can see I ground away some of the end of the mounting, and also flattened off the nut and bolt:

Then here's some pics of the LET turbo's oil and water lines fitted on the new VXR turbo:

Here's some pics underneath, you can see how little space there is between the downpipe and the mounting. That gap is approx. 4mm, after making some space for it :)

I started it on Saturday morning, all is running 100%. No leaks :party0031:

Then went for a brief drive this morning, everything feels good, the rattle from the downpipe also seems cured.

Special thanks to Allen & Danny for the tips and advice, and also Fox for his post with all the torque settings. This came in handy. Oh - and also thanks to Chris Hart on YouTube for the very useful step-by-step vid on how to do the swap.

Then lastly, I had a more detailed look at my original turbo - loosened the wastegate, and found a couple of small cracks behind the wastegate:

Update time: Fitted the new fuel rail and injectors this morning, didn't have too much trouble with that. Then I arranged to take it through to RBTS at lunchtime to have the remap done over the next few days.

On the way there, I noticed a couple of puffs of white smoke out the back :s very concerning considering that I just replaced the turbo and that it may in fact be the head. Anyway, after a quick pit-stop in Primrose and some DIY in the road, I think the issue may have been the breather / catch tank. As soon as I fiddled with the indicator, it let off some pressure. Which makes me wonder if my venting pipe is working as it should.

Anyways, after that, my brother didn't notice more smoke out the Ute on the way to RBTS. Just some puffs of black smoke - but that's just fuel.

On arrival there, the zorst had a coating of black in it. I rubbed my finger through it, and it was like a shiny "wet-looking" residue. I'm thinking this could just be excess fuel accumulating?

Now I just need to wait to get the Ute back :D

Ok so I got the Ute back on Friday afternoon. I was stuck at work, so my boet went to collect for me. Unfortunately he didn't get chance to speak to Ross as he was busy with another vehicle.

The results are as follows: 168wkW and 348wNm - at 0.7bar boost. :D

He wasn't able to boost higher due to pinging. Unfortunately so, but rather reliable than destructive.

Overall, the Ute is nicer to drive in real-world driving conditions. There is more mid-range power and torque. At the top end it's about the same. The turbo is also quieter than the old one, but give it horns and it chatters and chirps like a budgie high on fermented fruit, lol. I also noticed that there is an addictive crackle and pop out the exhaust on the overrun (if anyone has driven the Turbo Mini Cooper S, you will know what I'm talking about).

So overall, I am happy. It would've been nice to have 180-200kw, but I would much rather have a reliable daily driver, which doesn't break the bank each time I need to fill up with fuel + whatever other fancy additives are required.

Right, time for another update.

I am hitting the 11's!!!! :joy: :joy:

Unfortunately not quarter mile times, but fuel consumption figures. Things seem to be settling down nicely. Averaging 11.2l per 100kms now, that's pretty much rush hour traffic in the morning, and varied highway speeds.

On another note, I decided to change to an Armadillo roll-a-door at the back. Managed to pick one up for a good price. It's got a few nicks and scratches, but I'll sort that out over time. I also rubberised the back with some Durabak (birthday present from my wife last year). That was a mission, that stuff is super messy. I suggest anyone who uses this in future wears gloves! Nothing takes that stuff off your hands if you mess, lol.

Here's some pics:

Apart from the security benefits of the Armadillo, I thought it might be better at high speed. With the vinyl cover, it started to make a horrible "clapping" sound at about 190km/h. Now with the Armadillo, that threshold has moved up to 200km/h. Then it still makes the clapping noise. I guess I will need to research some aerodynamic changes I could do if I want to do anymore top-end runs, lol.

Looking awesome dude.
That's like the same consumption I'm getting on the stock 1.8  - traffic and town driving only.
