I also get that whining noise from time to time, especially when speeding.
I found that opening the door and kicking her out makes the whining go away

You getting rid of the dead weight?

His was a 530I (petrol) the viskus fan (clutch behind the radiator fan)

I think you mean the viscous coupling on the fan. Chef, you will only have this if your car has an autotragic 'box.

Yea sorry about the spelling.

Then definitely not that. Sound comes from under the engine where the turbo is

So, update.

I'm having a pressure test done on the turbo today, which might determine the fate of the "splendid hairdryer" or perhaps something else...

Holding thumbs!

Only caught this thread now, but what about the power steering pump? Usually makes more noise when steering, but can also make the noise similar to what you describe. The tensioner pulleys do become noisy, and are relatively cheap to replace, just a bit tricky to get to with the viscous coupling and fan.

Just a quick update:

The whining noise I had checked out again, this time with all sorts of gauges plugged in and diagnostics and what not...

NOT THE TURBO!!! :joy:

But the guys who said alternator were correct
It seems to be the alternator clutch (if I said that right) that makes the noise when cold. The alternator itself is charging 100% according to diagnostics. So the problem is not too serious.

Have been advised that a repair will cost about 5.5k though :fencelook: But that I should wait a bit?

Thoughts? :dunno:

You sure the alternator has a clutch? :dunno: AFAIK it doesn't on the e39. Maybe the A/C clutch? Or maybe it's a female car? :dunno: Or even the power steering pump like Phillip suggested. Could also just be a bearing in the alternator. :dunno: Hope it doesn't cause any issues when you go to Durban with the VDub crowd. :fencelook:

Glad its not the Turbo! :joy:

I want to say Alternator bearing... :fencelook: Which would be part no.1 on the diagram posted above...

Chef, it might just be the pulley ? :dunno:

what size does your car have? 120A or 150A?

at that price, you might as well get a brand new alternator? :dunno:

Had mine reconditioned about a year ago, it wasn't charging  , still like brand new :=):

On my recent trip down to the coast my car decided to get a bit difficult with me. Perhaps it doesn't like going to the beach...

It developed a starting problem which first led me to believe the alternator had finally packed up and wasn't charging the battery. I would get in, turn the key and not a single sign showed that the car wanted to start. No noise, no turn of the motor, nothing.

I hooked up the jumper leads and the car started, no problem. I unhooked the leads, switched the car off, turned the key again and the car started without a problem. So I left it for the night.

The next morning, I went out to the car, got in, turned the key and it started. No problem. Switched off, waited 5 minutes and tried again. Started again, no problem. Took it for a drive for about 15 minutes, switched off, turned the key, no start. All windows work, lights work, everything works fine, but the car won't start.

Left the car for a while, took a walk around for an hour, came back, got in, turned the key... Nothing. No start. All other electronics still working 100%.

Spoke to the car very nicely, gave it a kiss on the steering wheel... :fencelook: Turned the key. It started!

So now I'm stumped. Sometimes it starts, sometimes it doesn't. Seems to help when you show affection... :fencelook:

I can't keep relying on a kiss to start the car. Any ideas?

Thanks guys
