This morning, no whine :fencelook:
But tomorrow morning I'll start up the car and try take a recording of the sound if it comes up...

sounds like your tensioner pulley or main belt. My car did that when cold a few mornings. Got the main belt replaced and problem was gone.

So the whine is getting worse :argh:
A couple of people who have heard it say that it doesn't sound mechanical, but more like an air problem. Did someone say turbo? :fencelook::cry:
Took a recording, will try upload it tonight.

Thread revival.

I have heard noises that involve the tensioner pulley and noises involving the alternator.

This sound is nothing like it :fencelook:

It sounds like an audible turbo spinning slowly, but incredibly loud. Not high-pitched.

Still can't get an audio clip uploaded

Are you noticing a decrease in overall performance?

It seems there's a bit of a boost problem (I think) as the car will accelerate and suddenly accelerate a bit harder without me putting my foot down. But overall the performance is still very good :dunno:

I also get that whining noise from time to time, especially when speeding.
I found that opening the door and kicking her out makes the whining go away

His was a 530I (petrol) the viskus fan (clutch behind the radiator fan)

I think you mean the viscous coupling on the fan. Chef, you will only have this if your car has an autotragic 'box.
