Car crash

Hi guys,

Pretty pissed off at the moment but let me tell you what happened yesterday. Had training to do at the Cape Town Lodge which ended at 3pm.

Left the parking bay, turned into Buitengracht. Driving at 60-70 km. Still in Buitengracht, about a hundred meters ahead there was an intersection and I see a black Renault Clio. Now the driver decided to take a chance and cross the intersection but then his car stopped half-way across the rd because he sensed he wouldn't make it ! Fuck. My car slammed into his, at around 50-60 km's ! The impact of the crash was immense.

Both of my air bags went off. Smoke everywhere. It felt like there was a small explosion in my car. After around 3 seconds after the impact, I couldn't breath and got out of the car due to the build up of smoke. I had these burn marks on my arm, not sure how that happened but it must have occurred sometime after the air bags violently blasted out.

The guy asked me if I was okay. No, I wasn't okay. I was fucking upset. Admittedly, his car was more badly damaged than mine given that I hit him on the side. I fractured my thumb and had a few burn marks. He was not injured. I couldn't drive my car. I assumed there was a fire in the car due to the smoke but it was the air bags (have never been in an accident so I didn't know what the smoke was).

So you guys can imagine, I'm in Town, in Buitengracht, in the middle of traffic, scorching hot. Both cars are just in the way, I'm unable to move the car. His car is fucked, can't move and we are both just waiting for a tow truck to sort this out. Around 45 minutes of hell later (people swearing at us and pulling fingers and asking us to get the hell out the way ) a tow truck came along. We exchanged information.

The guy was an Indian, his uncle came along to help him out and told me not to worry, that accidents 'happen'. It really pissed me off. I did not vocally say anything as I was still in shock, but deep down, the guy was in the wrong.

Phoned my insurance company (Budget Insurance) and they are tell me an assessment will be completed on Tuesday. My car is a white BMW E90. Only the front of the car was damaged (I think), the front bumper was sort of fucked, the sensor on the front looked messed up and a couple of big dents in the paint work. Both air bags went.

So that was my day yesterday. How was yours ?

Man that sucks balls!!!!

Glad you ok.. I am sure its a scary experience having 2 airbags go off at you...

From what I have heard.. if airbags get deployed then chances are the car will be written off.. I could be wrong though...

But I guess now you have a excuse for the 330i or 330d you want :)

Glad you ok though

shame man that's terrible! i could say at least you ok... which is a great fact on its own, but i know how it feels when your "baby" is hurt and an accident that is not caused by yourself is even worse! Hope the insurance is not sticky about anything and this horrible incident is sorted soon! :thumb:

Yikes! Sorry bud. Terrible thing to go through. Glad you're not seriously hurt.
AFAIK if airbags deploy they write the car off, think the cost of the dash is immense :dunno: I stand to be corrected.

Air bags deployed car is right off most likely. Cost to replace dash etc is in excess of R150k . So if that is 75% of value = right off.

Wife's brother had 206. hit pavement air bags went off = car right off

Well not entirely, SAMBRA has been fighting with the OEM's for a long time to bring down airbag/safety equipment prices..

Its not just the airbags though, its the power cutoff, seatbelt pre-tentioners bla bla bla, so depending on the amount of stuff, that will determine if its a writeoff or not, but its basically a mathematical foruma. Recon / asset value % = decision to scrap or repair, depending on your policy.

Glad your OK bud, I really am... :)

Sorry guys for not responding, but my username and password was not working, no matter how many times I tried resetting my password so I just created a new account. Anyway, thank you for the kind words. Although I am very worried about having my car written off. I never knew that if both air bags were deployed that it meant instant write off. It's possible that isn't the case and I hope it's not. If my car is written off then I stand to lose a lot of money since I'm still paying the vehicle off (only had the car for six months or so) and they may give me next to nothing on the car. So fingers crossed.

did you not have a top up insurance ?

I can also recommend some brilliant guys in the industry for repairs... Always keep in mind that its your insurance money, the insurance cannot force you to use a specific company, and you do not always have to accept the cheapest quote...

Good luck bud....

I am currently under motor plan and I'm under the assumption that all repairs (at SMG) are handled by Atlantic Coachworks. So I think the car is required to go there for repairs. Not 100% sure, but that's what I'm thinking. The repair bill is not my concern because I have insurance so it should be taken care of. What concerns me most is if they tell me my car is going to be written off because it means I'll have to buy something else (keeping in mind I still owe a lot of money on the car) if they pay out peanuts on the car then it means my next car is a major downgrade. As much as I have enjoyed my ride, I can't spend more on another car and that is what scares me most.

If its under motorplan, you can be sure that it will go to a BMW approved panelbeater, which means a panelbeater owned by a dealership.

This means only OEM parts, dealer based labour rates, get the KY ready, this is going to be expensive....

How much cash are you going to be loosing, 40k or 100k.

Trust me on this one though, depending on the damage, seeing though that it is in motorplan, all that will be listed on the cars perm history, the car is going to be worth a lot less in the future, depending on your settlement shortfall, you may be better off...

Who are you insured with, and are you insured for trade or retail ?

I'm insured with Budget Insurance. The car is a 2005 model. So I have to assume it's insured under trade value, not retail, that would be crazy. I still owe around R80k on the car. Put a big deposit down (R80k). If I get R120k out (a big if) that means I'm left with R40k. That's a big loss in my book. So basically within 6 months I would have lost R40k. I don't think I'll recover from that to be honest. I'm am very happy with my E90 in white. Took a heck of a long time to get one. So again, fingers crossed.

Howdy,

Take a deep breath bud,

If memory serves, I think budget does insure for retail, but dont quote me on that...

Thing is, the 40k you are going to loose out of pocket, you would have lost that in resale value anyway, even more so with a car that has accident damage.

Phone one of the dealers tomorrow, anyone actually, and just ask them what trade and retail was for your specific car, that should give you a worst case scenario.

Good luck, and keep up posted, pm if there is anything I can do

Thank you very much for the advice. Took a deep breathe. :) I appreciate your concern. I'm hoping everything will be fine. Thing is, although I'm aware that I will lose money on the car anyway, since it's depreciating, the fact is I don't really have more money to spend and I also don't want to spend more time paying off another depreciating item. But I'll definitely keep you informed on what happens.

BTW, if anyone has Budget Insurance, please let me know if they cover retail value...or if it's trade value. I can't imagine them benefiting by covering retail value, surely they would lose out ?

Edit : I just checked my Budget policy and I don't see any mention of writing off the vehicle, whether it's trade or retail. Doesn't mention any of that.

Feel your pain...and anger. At least you are ok. From my experience, the car will not neccessarily be written off if the airbags deploy. I was quoted 20k per airbag, with the deciding factor being my repair bill exceeded 60% of the value of the car, and the car was thus written off.
