BuildaBeemer: Building a BMW E46 Track Car

seems to me the m50 intake is useless without lifting the rev-limit and changing the cams to something more aggressive

Also porting seems to be a requirement on the ports to take full advantage of the upgrade.

If it was me I would just put in some ITB's with cams and a custom intake manifold and an induction setup

Thanks for all the input, guys.
When Nick first suggested the m50 intake mod I was reluctant as most of the guys in the US running this had also done cams (important observation: whilst this mod is almost unheard of in SA, it is prolific in USA, with pretty much anyone who races an M50B30 doing the upgrade).
I am reluctant to do cams, for cost and reliability reasons. I have chatted with Shane on a couple of occasions (mentioned by Bernard above), and he has been down the cam route, and is now back on standard cams, for reliability reasons. Shane has a quick, reliable car. I take his advice seriously.
Second important point: Reliability is EVERYTHING in a race car. We want power in order to be fast, but not at the expense of reliability. The dyno numbers are a metric, but never an objective.
Bottom line is I am absolutely convinced that there is power to be had through proper tuning. I think we've made a blunder going down the Unichip / Dastek route - this is simply not a specialised enough tuning solution for this engine with these mods. My fault - I was the dick who thought this would do the trick. We live and learn ...
There is of course the possibility that we've made some other blunder(s) with all the other fiddling we've done - thermostat delete, M3 OFH and oil cooler, catch can - messing with water and oil flow, vacuum lines, etc, but I dont see anything obvious. Maybe Nick's hack job with a dremel doing the port matching went awry :).
What seems clear though is that there are many example of people making MUCH more power with exactly the same setup we have - the difference being specifically in the tuning.
Now, to make matters worse, our LS diff wont be ready for this weekend, so we have no power and long gears.
Its going to be tough trying not to get run over ...

Speak to Shane about ur motor, He runs a stock standard 330i motor in his race car and his quick running is Class C

Yes, am sucking as much info out of Shane as possible - he's been very helpful so far.

I dont mean it in any derogatory way, but why did you change the intake to an M50 item?

The b30 intake from the M54 is probably as good as one can get, and the M50 intake is a popular mod for the M52 engines..... Take note - Not the "TU" M52 engines, and certainly not for the M54 engine.

I am of the opinion that those who experienced any sort of gain with an M50 intake on an M54b30 had a malfunctioning DISA flap or some other masked issue, and now they are proclaiming it as an "Upgrade"

The M54 intake has been tested back to back on a flow bench by some serious guys - I cant recall the exact numbers but the M50 intake flows something like 40% more air than the M54 -its huge.

I would like to know but to be honest I never knew about this mod.

The areas I would do work on is to increase power is

M3 exhaust manifolds - DONE
Performance exhaust - PLANNED (BUT BEING CAUTIOUS, A LOT OF POWER OT BE LOST IF ITS DONE WRONG)
Reprofiled Cams - NOT PLANNED - SEE MY POST
Induction
Filter box with cone - DONE - RUNNING K&N CONE IN FABRICATED BOX. NOT CONVINCED ITS OPTIMAL.
Custom dyno tune - DEFINITELY, NEED TO FIND THE RIGHT TUNER

Incidentally, on the subject of cams, our neighbours across the pond make use of the ZHP cams which seem to be a relatively mild but effective upgrade. The ZHP was only sold in North America, so not a real option for us. If I could get my paws on a set I might change my stance...

Chat to Sherwin from Xcede - had mine done a few weeks ago and I can feel the difference. Power delivery is smoother and there's no longer a torque dip, plus the car feels sprightlier.

I have Viper branches and Exhaust + the tune.

+1 ...Viper Branch + Exhaust + 3.38 diff and Xcede SW...definitely a step ahead of the previous tuners file on the car!

Thanks, Bernard, will try and keep out of everyone’s way https://www.bmwfanatics.co.za/images/smilies/Top24/fencelook.gif

Finished the M50 manifold swap and had the car at Dastek for tuning today, but we haven’t got the results we were hoping for, so back to the drawing board.

Nick will post some info / questions here for comment, hopefully we can get to the bottom of it.

Need to chase Kriss tomorrow to see if our diff is ready - if we run the 2.93 open diff at Zwartkops we’re going to get murdered...

So, we're going to get murdered...

Craig and Nick have entered for Passion for Speed at Zwartkops on 1 Feb, they will be sharing the car, Craig in Race 1 and Nick in Race 2.

Rules of series requires them to start at the back of the Grid because it’s their 1st race. Wishing u guys all the best

Please share more details about the event on the 1st Feb. is it open to the public? Time?

Hi Preggyn

The Passion for Speed Festival is possible the biggest event on the Zwartkops calendar each year, and as an international event, the BMW Car Club Race Series is extremely privileged to be part of it - this shows just how highly regarded the BMW Race Series is for its excitement and crowd appeal!

It is absolutely available to the public (remember Zwartkops is an organisation that believes that motor racing is ALL about the spectators - without fans and spectators racing will simply die...)

Tickets are available at the gate, or through iTickets.co.za. The track was designed with spectators in mind, and there are no extra charges for grandstands and everyone has full access to all the pits so you can see the cars up close and personal.

Thursday and Friday are practice and qualifying, Saturday is cars and Sunday is bikes. I'll post the program below.

Would love to see some Fanatics there!

So, got through to Zwartkops for 1st practice this afternoon. A few last-minute things were tidied up this morning, and then off to scruitineering. We were a little nervous not knowing what to expect, but our stuff was all in order.
We were of course worried about power, and with the long open diff were keen to get out on track and see just how big a problem we really had. Driving to the track illustrated the absolutely odd power delivery characteristics. As the Dyno charts show, power and torque is extremely linear. No fireworks up at the top, but surprisingly torque and responsive. Oh, and it sounds great.
Our slot only allowed 30 minutes of practice, so I went out first, got things warmed up and then has a few flying laps before pitting and swopping out with Nick. All in all we each got 4 flying laps. On the upside, the car seems to be hooked up really nicely, with lots of grip and progressive slide. The new Endless pads are excellent, and we will need to adapt our braking points significantly to take advantage of them. On the downside, the diff is a nightmare. We were both spinning the inside wheel when coming out of a number of corners, so this is definitely costing us time. All told though, we were very satisfied, as we both managed to shave over 2 seconds off our previous runs in December. It seems with a little more development work and seat time the car is capable of running in class D.

Raceday Update: Short practice sessions on Friday, so Nick and I only got a few flying laps in each, but better than nothing. We were running tire pressure far too high, so we’ve brought them down to get a little more grip. Both of our times were a bit slower, but it seemed that way for most of the field, so perhaps the track was not were it was the previous day.
I went out for qualies, and quickly felt that we were well in with the other Class E cars. Session was red flagged halfway through to clear a stopped car, and while I was waiting for the restart in pit lane Nick came over and pointed out that I was losing a bunch of time in turn 4.
Got my head right after the restart, and times came steadily down. End result: we qualified fastest for Class E, and we’re also a little quicker than a couple of D cars Well pleased!
Despite this, as rookies we start at the back of the grid, with a piece of bunting tied to our rear tow strap to warn other drivers that there may be an idiot on track. Will try and keep out of trouble...
1st race 8:40. Super excited.

And ...
... a jolly good time was had by all ?.
Race 1: Got a very good pull through the rolling start, passing Manny in the BMW Car Club 325i Touring into turn 1, and took a tight line into the turn 2 hairpin to pass Nicholas Fischer. A lap later I was able to get drive around the outside of Bertie in Turn 6, to move up to 4th. I can’t quite remember where and how but I got past Colin in the car Club 328, and then past Carlos in the E30 325iS to move into second place. Nicholas van Zyl had taken advantage of the tussle behind him to make a clean getaway, and I never saw him. On lap 6 I needed to stay wide in turn 4 as a pair of Class A monsters came blasting through, and manny and Colin hopped on the back of that train to claim back their positions ?. I then picked up fuel surge, and was unable to get any speed up the straight between turns 3 and 4, but managed to hold on to my 4th place at the flag.

Race 2: Nick’s group has a sloppy start, and weren’t well bunched up, so he chased the pack through turn 1 and dove down the inside of Bertie into the hairpin to make his first pass. He was then able to pass Bernard in the Touring and had the legs on Nicholas van Zyl and Nicholas Fischer up towards turn 4, and chose a tight inside line pass. But Fischer got on the brakes early van Zyl had a look inside, had a rethink, and as Nick tried to push for the pass, van Zyl moved inside again, forcing Nick to put a couple of wheels on the grass to avoid a coming-together. He said some rude words, missed a gear, and then got back to work chasing them down, passing them both a short while later. I can’t recall where he got past Carlos, but eventually set his sights on Colin at the front. Unfortunately engine temps started to rise, leaving him to short-shift through the last 2 laps, but he held on for 2nd.

We both had grins from ear to ear - what an absolute rush!
Will post the video footage of the races.

Hats off!!! Super well done to you and Nick...I am reading this thread like a good book! The car looks awesome...I like the silver and orange combo...maybe just me but that spoiler would look good in orange too - hint hint!

Well done on your results. I must be honest reading your previous posts I was worried you guys were going to have another disappointing track day due to the diff and lack of tuning results - something which I am sure none of us wanted for you two to have. However...we did not need to deal with that. Excellent results. And the other drivers now have the new kids on the block to recon with that is for sure. Your hard work and dedication has and is paying off and your father son adventure carries on! Looking forward to the videos. I unfortunately cannot offer any technical/mechanical advice besides for check the water and oil lol.

I've always want to build a race car on the side...you guys inspire me.
