guns loaded .... it WILL stay green!

What we might do is take the 22" from Natascha's kit and put them on the Hamann as she complains already of the "hard ride"

Then she will get the 20" I have in stock......
Maybe we spray the 22" in dark green metalic as well?

...and I keep the 21" in stock for the next X5 project!

BMW X5 Hamann Build | Update 16/01/12

Work on the Hamann has officially started. :joy:

To begin with we removed the mirror covers which were scuffed and had the new spoiler primed for spraying. This will be done today and ready for re-fitting tomorrow.

SAM_3829.jpg

Another reason for removing the mirror caps is because the Repair Team needed an actual colour sample to work from to match the paint colour and flake finish as close as possible.

Some may have noticed that on almost every car these days that there is a slight shade difference between the paint on a plastic bumper and metal paintwork. The reason for this is because the paint reacts differently to plastic. By matching the spoiler to the plastic paintwork we can offer an almost identical colour match.

The mirror caps themselves are also being resprayed.

For a car getting this much love and attention it doesnt exactly look all that happy does it?

To finish off with the Hamann the car was dropped off at Brightons to have the front valence and lower bumper removed for the sensor relocation which will be completed tomorrow.

The car was re-parked and I decided to do a quick inspection on the work on the front bumper:

SAM_3938.jpg

Absolutely perfect! Smooth and even the Brighton Team did an awesome job relocating the sensors. The plastic welding is superb too!

With the bumper repair complete I decided to have it sprayed before refitting, so off we went to my repair team.

On arrival look what I found:

Freshly painted mirrors and a spoiler for the Hamann.

The bumper was dropped off and will be sprayed this morning first thing, returned to Brightons and fitted before the car comes up to have it kit resprayed and dents removed.

A productive week on the Hamann, things are starting to look better now!

She looks great! Well done Mike!

Just one question, how do you let a top marque vehicle like that fall into such a state...? Owner should be shot... :fencelook:

Simple, you lend it to family who are here for a holiday.

The owner is actually very pedantic about the car, hence us fixing it for him.

BMW X5 4.8 Litre Hamann | Prepwork and Dent Removal

Desperate to make some progress on the car after the bumper which took ages we booked the car in with my Repair Team at Dent Magic to respray the entire Hamann Kit.

Also to do was fix the small mishaps, smooth the finish and remove all dents on the car.

I arrived early to find the team had already sanded down the arches, rear bumper and filled the damage.

It was quite shocking seeing the Hamann in this condition to be honest as this car scares the hell out of me - All I wanted was the paint and to get detailing. :joy:

Do you remember this little mishap:

All smoothed out and filled:

Now for those that are paying attention you may notice that the Hamann is now sporting its bumper with minor modifications.

The bumper with moved parking sensors (now working 100% too) and resprayed.

In the meantime, our dent pusher began working on the rear door removing three spot dents and a further small dent on the front drivers door.

All done, dents pushed and Hamann ready to be sprayed!

Our next update will run through the prepwork involved for the actual sprayjob and in progress shots.

BMW X5 4.8 Litre Hamann Update | Respraying the Hamann Kit

Well, a big update for the fanatics out there and for those following this thread.

The Hamann Kit has been completely resprayed, in fact I am a bit behind - The car has already been detailed, completed and delivered! :joy:

But for now I will giving you guys an update on the respray work carried out by my Repair Team at Dent Magic Tygervalley.

The day started with the car being pulled inside to be prepped for the spraywork.

SAM_4239.jpg

The guys started by taping up all the gaps, taping up the lights, exhausts and wheel arches.

SAM_4243.jpg

They then covered the car in two plastic sheets, which were cut out around the areas being sprayed protecting the rest of the paintwork from any overspray during the colour and clearcoat phases.

SAM_4254.jpg

SAM_4257.jpg

SAM_4260.jpg

The mag wheels were also covered as the kit is seated quite far under the arches and that area also needed to be sprayed.

SAM_4261.jpg

Prepwork on the go:

SAM_4263.jpg

SAM_4272.jpg

With the car prepped the team mixed up the paint - This was done by taking the BMW colour code for Deep Green Metallic, processing it in the computer and then confirming the right shade by use of small palettes before selecting the final colour mix.

The paint is mixed in a small cup, using a scale which picks up even the tiniest variances in the mix. An overfill of a particular colour and you start all over again.

SAM_4278.jpg

This particular colour is made up of about 7 different colours, ranging from blue through to black through to adding a hint of pearl.

SAM_4279.jpg

Finally after much patience and amazement from my side the colour was ready to be sprayed onto the car.

SAM_4281.jpg

Meanwhile, the kit was primed in preparation for the colour spray.

SAM_4282.jpg

And so, with the car prepped and primed paintwork finally began with a layer of green applied.

SAM_4288.jpg

SAM_4295.jpg

SAM_4313.jpg

SAM_4319.jpg

SAM_4321.jpg

An inspection under a 3M spotlight was then done to check the paint for any running, uneven spray and with everyone happy the clear was then added.

SAM_4325.jpg

SAM_4326.jpg

We decided that because of previous experience with spraying the bumper we would allow the clear to dry naturally as apposed to using the IR Lights. The reason being that when the paint on the front bumper dried under IR Light the finish was very wavey and uneven. However when they re-sprayed it and it dried naturally the finish was drastically improved.

The Hamann Kit is fibreglass and even when primed getting a perfect finish is quite a challenge, hence us choosing not to rush the drying process - It seems this was a great move!

SAM_4330.jpg

SAM_4333.jpg

SAM_4334.jpg

How is that finish? No wet-sanding, no polishing yet. Pure spraywork!

With the car "de-prepped" the team changed their focus to polishing and sanding the new finish to remove any imperfections.
