BMW Patent Filing Reveals Plans for Twin-Turbo V-6, Should the M3 Get it?

A recent discovery made by the folks at Bimmerpost adds more fuel to the speculation regarding the next-gen BMW M3’s power plant. That discovery includes a series of patent applications filed by BMW last year which describe two new engine designs from the company – a pair of twin-turbo V-8s and V-6s. The existence of a twin-turbo V-8 shouldn’t come as a shock – as such an engine is already employed in the X5 M, X6 M, and upcoming M5 – but for some diehard BMW fans, just knowing that BMW is even thinking about adding a V-6 to its repertoire might be reason to shed tears.

Known for its smooth, torquey straight-six engines, BMW has let tradition rule over convention in the past, sticking with the inline layout when nearly every other I-6 maker abandoned it in favor of more compact V-6 designs. Now, BMW could be reconsidering that choice, and may be looking at turbo V-6 power for the next M3.

The drawings in the patent filing clearly show a V-6 engine design. What makes this engine potentially worthy of a new patent is its unique sequential turbo system, which Bimmerpost says feeds exhaust gases from all six cylinders into one turbocharger. From here, excess gas can be routed into the exhaust system, or into another, presumably bigger, turbo. Bimmerpost predicts that the smaller turbo will utilize a twin-scroll turbine housing design, which would allow for even distribution of the exhaust gas pulses and likely result in quicker spool-up and better response. This design feature is already used on the turbocharged 3.0-liter I-6 engines found in several BMW models.

Whether or not BMW is indeed committing the ultimate betrayal – in the eyes of a few BMW fanatics – the patent application for at least one V-6 engine has been filed. We’re fans of change, but we’re also fans of BMW’s buttery-smooth straight-sixes. What do you think? Should BMW stick to its guns and continue to develop its proven inline-six formula? Or should the company get with the program, and embrace the V-6 as the six-cylinder of the future?

It will be a sad day! V6 always sounds like there are 2 cylinders missing, I6 is something special.

I know that that bmw are gonna continue to make great M cars regardless of engine. its a new era, some may not like it but bring on the turbo's!

but is it not easier to turbo an I6... this does not make sense to me...

Maybe aftermarket, but if you are designing from scratch, I don't really see why. They will probably follow a similar recipe to the V8 with the turbos in the V...

guess it makes sense then... because there will be more space infront of the engine for plumbing...

i was thinking they would have to have 4 turbos for the sequential did not think of putting them in the V...

I understand the reasons for going V6, they are a more compact design and use less fuel compared to the V8's. Knowing BMW they will place the turbos between the cylinder heads like the X6M. This does make sense as the intakes sit lower down where the air is cooler and the heat from the turbos is expelled without heating up the entire engine bay. Efficient Dynamics at work again...

I have always liked the sound of a sweet V6, always preferred it over the i6 sound so I encourage BMW for going V6.

Maybe they have perfected the I6 so much that there is really no where else to go:dunno::dunno::dunno:

must say the familair N/A I6 soundtrack will be missed by me:cry:

Nothing like the sound of a M20B25 motor accelerating

in light of this im getting me a e46 or 325i or 330i in the next few months and keeping it at home locked away for futre generations:fencelook:

Well they're headed for front-wheel drive cars, so a V6 was almost certain. Sounds like definite plans to mash the hot-hatch market.

meh, who cares in anyway, BMW M went out the window the moment BMW starting fitting turbos to "so called" M's.

I agree that the BMW I6 is legendary! But it will be interesting to see what they develop in the V6 configuration! My thinking is that it will blow most other (if not all) other existing V6's out there. However, this ongoing "scaling down" that is going on is a bit off putting - move to more I4 engines, and even front wheel drive, all very out of character for BMW...
