AFAIK there is no 320 Touring Pre-facelift. Perhaps you meant 325 touring 2000 model?

I dont think you would see them under 12l per 100km very often.
So if your worried about fuel cons, your looking at the wrong cars.:tease:
Fuel Consumpsion - Highway 10.97
Fuel Consumpsion - Urban 20.18
Consumption Annual Average 14.3
540i
and if you look at the 530i? or 730i?
more or less the same or is there a big drop in consumption?
There is no such thing as a 730i in SA.
Only 740 and 735 and the latter is a piece of junk. It consumes the same fuel as the 740, costs the same to maintain and is slow.
Also remember that in 1995 only the e34 540 and 530 were available. No e39.
It seems like your model search gets wider with each post:fencelook:

One can fit newer gen injectors, but it's costly time consuming and will only really pay off if you keep the car for a couple of years. Also takes some research to really get into it.

Some 320d's have turbo issues, and a word of advice don't buy form dealers. They will sell you a 320d and it WILL be clocked back and you'll be led to believe the car will run trouble free for many miles and it won't.
Now, you are right in saying the 5 and 7 series makes you feel like king of the road. As you rightfully will be  But, I may get flamed, I won't recommend one for you. Not as a daily / only car at least.
The newer ones, '97 onward e39's with the M62 motors (4.4 liter) have water cooled alternators, very weird and also epically pricey to fix / replace. And they're not really faster or more powerful than the older M60 (4 liter) motors, found on the 96 and older 5 series.
I would strongly recommend a 330i if you can find a decent enough one in that price range. Seriously. As jy wil afshow is daai kar die baas.
So much torque. From 1000rpm the car pulls like a train. Please do yourself a favour and drive one. It's not a small car by any means. It feels much more sporty in every driving scenario than a 5 or 7.
I've owned a 540i and a 330i and will have a 330i any day again. Consumption is much better, services cheaper, car is faster etc... And you can find a manual!
However there is something special about owning a V8. You feel like like mafia on the road. And not much beats that.
My vote 330i. Or if you can live with a diesel go 330d. Even if it's the 5spd manual. Still a great car! You can pick up a nice 2002 330d 5spd manual for about R75k.

Budleigh said:With my auto 540i (M60, not terribly efficient automatic) I get 14-15l per hundred in town, driven judiciously but not in a saintly fashion. It seems to be more efficient the faster you go, on the open road - usually see 8-9l per hundred if kept below 120, but you feel like you're going to fall asleep, and the car sounds like it will too. With cruise on at 135, it averages 10,9l per hundred.
An E39 540i would be better because it's more aerodynamic/more efficient in general. A 740i would, correspondingly, be worse.
A 330i is a nice compromise - lots of performance while being quite light on fuel relative to what it is. If, like me, you don't like the 3 series that much, then an E39 530i is a decent bet - they're facelift models, so relatively recent, are generally more reliable/have less niggles than the V8, and handle better because they have rack&pinion steering. Also, they're less likely to have been thrashed than a 330i will have been, because their ownership profile is different.

Yes, but we never got those in SA.
We only got the 740i with the M60B40, M62B44 and M62TUB44 and then the 735i with the M62TUB35 later on.
