Thought I'd be sneaky and look on the RealOEM site, but they only have the 328 etc :thumbdo:

Lol, I also tried that. Still no luck on the frame. Keeping on with the search.

Closest thing I could find was a drawing of the 501 and its chassis. Seeing as they were made in the same era, it should be a safe assumption that the chassis's should be similar.

Here is also a great pic of a 507 next to a Z8

YES! I remember that it looked similar to that, but I also know that bmw modified it for the 507, I think it was shorter and a bit more narrow iirc.

That is by far my favorite colour on a 507! Nice

Search paid off! well kinda.

I saw that pic with the cut. It looks like the visible chassis is the same design as the 501. Can work with that.

The window is proving tricky. Will need to think about that. I see there is a classic car window manufacturer in ct. Will have to see of he has something with similar dimensions.

Its been a while since I heard from the guys on the forum.
I have been looking into possible donor cars and the Z3 is not cheap (around R80 000). I know that I can get a E36 for under R30k and an E46 similar if you look long enough. It only has to be mechanically sound.

The 507 car body has the following measurements:
Wheelbase: 2479mm
front track: 1441mm
rear track: 1422mm

The Z3 I'd like to use is very similar
Wheelbase: 2446mm
front track: 1412mm
rear track: 1430mm

But seeing as they are so expensive, I was thinking of using a more available E36
Wheelbase: 1700mm
front track: 1422mm
rear track: 1444mm

The E46 has very similar dimensions to the E36.

Would the z3 work without modifying the chassis? If you have to cut up the chassis it will be cheaper to go the E36 route, the work load would be very similar or perhaps just building a chassis from scratch.

Sorry if this is a bit of stupid question, but what about a cobra chassis?? You'll have to build in a drive train ect, but if you want a V8 it might be easier fitting one in a Cobra chassis than a z3? :dunno:
There are quite a lot of muscle car builders in SA that should be able to help with a empty chassis. Could maybe get the wheelbase right for you? Good chance they could do the drive train too.

Wheelbase: 2286 mm
Front track: 1422 mm
Rear track: 1422 mm
Length: 3962 mm

@Nic_S There are no stupid questions... you might have thought about something I was too dof to think about.
I am going to speak to the guys that do the Austin Healey replicas. They aren't too far from me. I just need to find some time to head through. The only reason I have been leaning toward the donor BMW is that then it should have a working engine, suspension, drive train etc. But it is not necessarily the best option. Seeing as I haven't done this before I am open to any and all suggestions.

I had no idea there were people building Healey replicas. I love the old healey's :)

Here's what I was kinda thinking:
- Cobra chassis with brakes and diff
- BMW V8
- Manual transmission

BMW M60 motors (From the E34) are pretty easy to find and you can fit the 5 speed manual gearbox from a E34 530i as it also uses the M60 motor. The better option would be to get the newer, more reliable M62 from the E39, but I'm not 100% sure what manual gearbox you can fit to it. I think the 5 speed box from the M60 will work (Rick540, Uber Soldat, and clutchplate should know). If you feel lucky you might be able to get your hands on the 6 speed box which was available on the E39 540i, but is very rare.

EDIT: This is if you want to go with a V8 of course. Dumping a new body on a running E36 might be easier, but I'm sure there will be other issues. Stuff like the engine and gearbox is already in place and you'll need to work around already fixed things like that. Starting with empty chassis should give more room to play.

Hi Guys

I need to give a shout out to Roger. He gave me an awesome lead on the project. Check out a New Zealander who did the impossible. Sadly his taste in cars isn't perfect, but he had vision.

:bravo::bravo::bravo::bravo::bravo::bravo::bravo::bravo::bravo::bravo:

This is more the type of build I have in mind.

Remember that modern BMW's are of a uni-body construction. So you cant "just put a different body on a z3". You will have to strip the sub frames and find a way to connect them to the new body. So building a new chassis is a given. Since you have a good Idea what the chassis of the 507 looks like I would start from there. I also prefer aluminium forming but I understand that if you can't do it yourself then it will be very expensive. So fiberglass if you next option. Very easy compared to metal shaping, anybody with a bit of time and practice can do it.

BTW, in car design, 50mm in wheelbase change is HUGE. It changes the car immensely not even to mention the proportions of th 507. Never mind a 779mm change. The car will not come out looking like a 507.

I say, this car is quite primative and as such it can be replicated easier than most! Start with the chassis and power plant and work your way up from there. But make sure to get the chassis dimensions spot on.

Jacques

I think if you can build this 507, it will be the type of ride that will make grown men have erections, and woman dripping with sexual extacy... :praise:

Does anybody have an idea about the size of the cars wheels? I found a website stating that the car used 6.00-16 wheels. This I know is a tractor tire size, but if I am not mistaken its a 27" tire. Which sounds way too big. Or am reading this incorrect and its a 16" wheel?

27" is correct (about). Closest tire you will find without importing expensive classic tires would be 205/70 R16. Yes, the 507 had a 16" wheel.
