Hi TwinzSorry to hear Dax not a nice experience to go through. I hope this can be fixed and resolved soon so you can get the car on the road again.
it was cranked several times, I had an external gauge connected and pressure was good before starting (Once we had pressure we did another "Long Crank")was the new oil pump "primed" this is essential, if not done , this could also happen, turbo's will also have damage, best way of being sure , after a build like this , almost the best way to check it is to have the oil feed to turbo disconnected, plugs and coils disconnected and crank the engine untill oil appears out the oil feed line, after my build ( kadett engine ) it took a couple of minutes before oil pumped out the oil feed to turbo, priming the oil pump while assembling also took a while, after assembling the crank and mains, the block was turned upside down , i poured oil into the oil pick up and turned crank by hand untill oil was visible at top side of oil ports on top of block, some forgets this step after a new oil pump change and can end badly.
My brother, you just hit the nail on the head.I hear so many horror stories like this with mechanics in SA. The worst part about it is they never take responsibility for when things go wrong even if its 5km after first start up. It's always magically the clients fault.
The incompetence in this country is mesmerizing to say the least. Not even the dealerships in this country are up to the task.
As much as I think you're probably right - the odds of getting your desired outcome are slim to none, sadly. These guys all know that consumer rights in SA are worth the price of 2nd hand toilet paper, so they'll never reimburse or cover any of your costs - even if they're fully to blame.Hi,
So below are the sizes of crank journals measured by an engineering company appointed by the BMW dealer in CPT
I believe the following:
BMW SA should replace crank, it is clear that big end number 6 is out of spec (Too Big)
BMW SA should then claim against manufacturer of the crank.
The rest of the repairs and parts is on the Builder (Gaskets, Bolts, Seals, Rods and labor) it was most probably and combination of the incorrect torque and oversized journal that caused the failure
This is the first thing any engine builder should do, measure all journals and check clearances "Dry Assembly"
Please give me your thoughts and what you would do in this situation with BMW and engine builder

This is so F@#$*! Up
Unfortunately this is the truth. I have been down similar roads with BMW several times now. They never come to the party even when they stuff up. It’s not just BMW its any dealership….the problem is South Africa is a 3rd world country, we as consumers have pretty much no rights and trying to fight them ends up being such a hassle that they win due to most people not having the time or energy to go through the ombudsman and all that crap.As much as I think you're probably right - the odds of getting your desired outcome are slim to none, sadly. I've been the ombudsman route - it's a massive time waster, and at the end of the day, nothing comes of it (their rulings are not enforceable in any meaningful sense). If your loss here is massive (i.e. R100k+) it might be worth actually getting a lawyer and taking things on that way, but the ombud is truly a complete waste of time.Unfortunately this is the truth. I’m not sure if you’re agreeing with me or just repeating what I said about the Ombudsman? but this is Pretty much what I stated in my comment….I've been the ombudsman route - it's a massive time waster, and at the end of the day, nothing comes of it (their rulings are not enforceable in any meaningful sense). Lets see what BMW say about the crank, Engine Builder, well only one way to fix that is to name and shame and allow others to be aware of the idiots claiming to be engine builders.I’m not sure if you’re agreeing with me or just repeating what I said about the Ombudsman? but this is Pretty much what I stated in my comment….It’s all a waste of time.
ja, agreement, the motor industry ombud is a proper paper tiger.I’m not sure if you’re agreeing with me or just repeating what I said about the Ombudsman? but this is Pretty much what I stated in my comment….It’s all a waste of time.
