Hot on the heels of the X3 Mzansi Edition, BMW SA is now introducing the 3-Series Mzansi Edition...

At least these 4-pots come in at under R1mil...

From www.carmag.co.za:

Priced at R831 524 (318i), R863 692 (320i) and R908 126 (320d), the 3 Series Mzansi Edition models command a premium of around R83 000 over the equivalent M Sport models.

On the outside, the special edition is treated to a M Sport package, with high-gloss Shadow Line detailing for the grille, which also features LED backlighting that illuminates when the vehicle is locked and unlocked. Until now this ‘glow grille’ has only been available in the X6. The front splitter, with carbon fibre inserts, also gets high-gloss black treatment, as do the side sills and rear diffuser. M carbon mirror caps, red brake callipers, carbon fibre rear spoiler, black chrome tail pipes and BMW Individual lights, in Shadow Line, round off the external enhancements.

The 3 Series Mzansi Edition rolls on 19-inch M light alloy wheels and customers can choose from five colour options: Mineral Grey Metallic, Portimao Blue, Mineral White Metallic, Alpine White and Black Sapphire Metallic.

Cabin decor comes in the form of M seatbelts and a seat upholstery combo of Alcantara and Sensatec, with contrast stitching. Standard features include ambient lighting, a glass sunroof and BMW Live Cockpit Professional.

The 3 Series Mzansi Edition is available in three model flavours: 318i, 320i and 320d, and there are no engine mods to speak of. The former two are powered by a 2-litre turbopetrol motor, producing 115 kW and 250 N.m in the 318i and 135 kW / 300 N.m in the 320i, while the 2-litre diesel option is good for 140 kW and 400 N.m.

If you spend R15 000pm on a 318i you need to get your head checked :ROFLMAO:

You can get a "older" G20 M340i or 330d for that kind of money:

Remember the days when we used to laugh at folks who would put LEDs behind their grilles? It also wasn't just previously on the X6 - we were laughing about it nearly 2 years ago already looking at the G20 M Performance parts list...

What a joke

I do not mind the grille lighting, although not really needed. Certainly wouldn't pay extra for it though.

I think they hit the nail on the head with the Mzansi edition being a more flashy version of the common 3 series in the most popular 3 series models and I feel it gives what the average South Africa who wants to buy a BMW is after - image and trying to show off their "status". Helps make them seem "fancy" and important because they drive a BMW in M sport trim and now it has lights behind the grille...

Yet it's still just an 18i 3 series and I feel they're crazy for spending that money on such a car.

Each to their own.

Chump change for the guys with Digital Vibes or who have managed to secure a slice of the state capture or covid-19 relief fund pie.

Yeah, despite the crazy price, we will likely see every single one sold using some or the other finance scheme...

What kind of person buys a 318i when you can get the 320i for literally 30k more?

The kind of person who believes it is a LiMiTeD EdItIoN #Collectors LMFAO

The market is crazy but it is not impossible to still buy very special cars that won't lose much value at these prices. I don't know why you would spend nearly R1M on a car and worry about its fuel consumption or it being 'cheap and cheerful' anyway.

Buying new definitely has its market share. A lot of people buy these models on finance hence the service and maintenance plan offers them one less expense to worry about.

But I'd have to agree with you, the prices are absolutely ridiculous. The Australian market complain about their car prices (which are about the same this side if you directly convert) even when people average around R800k pa coupled with access to 3% loans. Goes to show how shit our economy has become.

Eish, something needs to be done and quickly. SA wasn't always like this. Early 2000s, business and the economy was definitely booming.

These sticker prices are the prices for BMW Finance deals only (the magical low interest rate is actually subsidized by the actual price being lower than sticker price).

If you are paying cash or financing yourself, then you should be getting a big discount.
I remember back in the E90 days when BMW were offering the option of R50k-70k off OR prime - 5% on the 320i and 320d models of that time.
It seemed like they inflated the sticker prices to make the discounts (or preferential rates) seem more attractive.

Anyway, I am not the target market for this car - selling my Porsche at full retail value will still keep me R100k+ under the price of this 318i...

I see your 318i and raise you a 118i for R729k!.
At least the 318i is a 2.0T (115kw) and RWD.
This 118i is a 3-cylinder (103kw) 1.5T FWD hatch, sharing lots of DNA with the Mini Cooper...

This is used, low mileage 981 Porsche Cayman S money....

I just saw an ad come on across my social media for a cayenne at 799. Why on earth anyone would spend 729 on a 118 or 597 on a 318 is beyond me another 70 more in the case of the 118 and 200 more on the 3 series and you’re driving a cayenne
