I am fairly certain there is a way to get them to pay you out directly, and then you carry out the repairs yourself. You will then have to take the car for an assessment after repair before they will insure it again.

Honestly, on such an old car, which has already depreciated so much, do you really think having this 'mark' on its history, which is purely cosmetic damage, is really going to prejudice resale more than the age, mileage, and the fact that it is a 5 series (compared to say a 3series)?

^^^ there's record here to prove that the damage is cosmetic. Refer any future would be buyer to this thread.

Agreed, Its not as if there is any suspension, engine damage etc, that would have been another story then, cosmetic is really not a bad "comment" not that it will have a comment like with bmw saying what was replaced

Sorry to see this......
I agree with the majority of comments on getting it repaired, the fact its cosmetic will not have that much impact on resale, I would say that more than 50% of cars on the road have had some or other cosmetic damage repaired and the likelihood of someone investigating accident damage on a car of that vintage is very slim. All you do is be honest with the buyer if that time ever comes and show him the pictures if he/she asks about "accident damage" so they can judge for themselves.

Keep it!!

I also agree, obviously, get it fixed.
but i would not worry too much about resale value. e39's have hit rock bottom in resale value, i think in time they wil appeciate once the masses realize / cotton on, that the e39 is one of bmw's best made cars..

think of it this way, you are going to want a little extra for your car if you sell it probably because of its maintenance record and perhaps the rareity of the msport and some of the extras etc etc...

this already cancels out 98% of the buyers who wont give you a extra 0.01 for that.. so it'll sell to some sort of enthusiast more than likely.

i wouldnt worry about it at all.
Ill send those pics later today

However, good second hand is the way to go here, second hand parts of course is also very much endorsed by every major insurance company.

When a dronkie ran infront of my Sabre, it damaged the fender, bumper, windscreen, mirror, indicator light and the front of the roof.

I too was scared of writing off, as the car's insurable value was low. So I sourced a second hand fender, bumper and indicator light. I then sourced a mirror, and dropped the car off, by a toppie I have known for years. He done the repairs and it worked out cheaper. I then had him claim for a windscreen and labor, insurance reimbursed me for the replacement items I bought

If the car is written off by the insurance, it is not written off on the car's papers.

The only time the car will become a code 3 is if you go to the licensing department yourself and "scrap" the car and after that register it again.

sadly this is how so many dealers have written off cars on their floors as code 2 vehicles. I nearly ended up with one in my driveway, luckily I saw it had work done, and asked Coisman to check it out.

The insurers have already stated that they won't be paying me out directly.

It's going to Dent Doc Boksburg for repairs as it seems it was 8k short of being written off :=):

Thanks all for the support and encouraging words.

The quote has been revised but is still high, however the car won't be written off. I still need to meet with the assessor at Dent Doc in Boksburg for them to go through the quote etc, to see if anything needs changing and to make sure the quote isn't unrealistic.

I actually really don't care for the price of the quote. As I see it, I'm paying a ton of money each month for insurance because of my age and so it's time to get my money's worth. I will accept nothing but the best job done on this 5er and I will make sure it doesn't cost me a cent, as it was not my fault.

Why should I pay for the inconvenience caused to me by someone else...?

Sorry to see this Chef. I'm sure you'll be sorted in no time. Regarding the headlights. A few years back, I got a new set directly from Hella SA (HASA) and it cost me around half the price compared to the dealers. Not 100% sure they still can do this, but it's defs worth a try. There is no reason they should not be able to sell you the parts. Back then it was actually a very pleasant experience. They even delivered to my door for free.

LZ has nothing to do with it, other then providing guidance to Chef. I have no involvement with Dent Doctor at all.

However, my wife does still work there, and knows exactly how important it is to look after the fanatics.

I did speak to the new owner and told him that if he screws uo this job, that he will never get work from the fanatics again, so that may help a bit :)

Sorry to hear Chef

If you do not get sorted i saw a very neat M/SPORT 530d in vereeniging black interior Auto, did not check the mileage or year model but the car was awesome, i stopped because i actually thought it was the M5.

If you need more info on the car i can pop in to the dealer and get you all the info you need. Just PM me.
