Looks excellent

How did you find the diy?

It helped, although I didn't remove the tyre. Just jacked up the car and turned the wheel so that I could get better access.

Are yours different in design to the Lux product? I see they have a large heatsink, and been through quite some iterations (now on V4) but @ R3k too pricey. They're also plug & play with the box sitting inside of the light cover - nice and clean.

OK, so I've just installed these bulbs and.... they were a bit of an anti-climax.

You've all seen the pics of the 3 series above with the same bulbs, but the ones on my 1 series do not look nearly as bright.

I guess its hard to judge by pictures, but the pictures below tell a very different story. I'm pretty sure I've installed them correctly, seeing as they only go in one way, and the tests were done with full power DRLs.

LEDs:

ps: I am aware that the LEDs pulse and this may affect what the camera sees, but I adjusted to a longer exposure thing to grab a few pulses, so what you see here is what it looks like with your own eyes.

As you can see, the outer ring barely even lights up, and this was taken at 4 pm in the afternoon in the shade on a sunny day.

I'm a bit unsure why one of the LEDs faces completely upwards away from the light conductor to the outer rings. The design seems questionable. But in any case, I rotated them in multiple directions while installing and their orientation doesn't make much of a difference to the brightness.

I guess its all part of the learning curve, but I was looking forward to these working well during the day, especially after seeing some promising pictures posted earlier here and on the 'coming soon' thread. Perhaps its just the design of the 1 series headlights, who knows.

I'm going to give these a bash for a week, but if I'm not satisfied, I think I'll sell to someone who has a beemer which takes better advantage of the LEDs. Please PM me if you're interested in any case.

I still thank Rennzport for the easy and speedy service!

Its the globe.

Care to elaborate? Do you mean teh globe is faulty, or just not good enough to produce the desired result?

I have looked online, and the best seems to be the Lux V3 H8's, but they are very expensive.

In any case, having looked at quite a few pics of e90's with the above LEDs in that have been posted, and seen what seem to be fairly decent results, its definitely not the case on the 1 series. Even last night the angels were less than impressive. Niems will post pics.

Just an update on the LEDs on my 1 series:

We took a photo at night to give the greatest contrast:

Conclusion: these bulbs are NOT recommended for 1 series E81/E87 vehicles. The light conductors are in very different places to other BMW models (7 and 5 oclock instead of 9 and 3 oclock --> which is ideal for the LED orientation), and hence do not take full advantage of the light produced by the LEDs.

I will be trying high-temp halogens when available though! :)

Ok thanks guys! I also found it strange since nobody else reported their cars throwing a code.Tested two other brand new sets and it still gave an error so it's obviously not the globes, perhaps the software on the car? Does anyone perhaps know another way around it or a solution?

@ Niems... I'v got an e92 and I had the same problem that you had.My outer ring was non existant lol because of the way its designed, where the bulb faces upwards and the thing is that it only tightens in one position. So in the end i positioned the led right in front of the tube leading to the outer ring and it has made quite a difference, still not as bright as the e90's in this thread but it did make a difference. On the downside it doesnt lock in that position obviously so i used prestik to secure it and no issues so far, alot better than it was.I know its not ideal but definitely worth a try.Goodluck!

I had a look at the LED setup on Revo's e92 and his point directly at the light ports for the outer rings (they are positioned horizontally), and they look good! Strange how yours don't?

Maybe what you can try do is take out the 4 screws at the back of the unit, rotate the aluminium piece 90 degrees, and then screw them back in.

Hi Revo

I got my AE's today. I just finished fitting them. They looks good (at least at night). I will take more pics of daytime.

One thing to not for Halogen guys. Due to the bigger reflector the main beams tend to wash out the white light when both AE's and Headlights are on. Which really sucks. I hoping to install some whiter bulbs to see if it saves the day.

Another the thing my August 2011 323iM has a slightly different Valeo headlight to the one in the illustration which I assume is a ZKW. I didnt have to remove any wheels to acces the globes. I just removed the clipon cover and loosened the airbox on the passenger side. It took around 5mins per light.

The original AE unit is also different with this Valeo lights, there is not metal bracket that remains after removeing the OEM AE. But the LED unit fits flush into the Headlamp frame.

Thanks bro
