Morning all;
Just red this thread. I recently removed mine on my 330d. I will not recommend it thou. These are multi valve engines and you will notice that the intake has 12 outlets, 2.0d's has 8. The reason for this is for better lowdown torque. This is where the swirl flaps come in. On low rpm it is closed, so the engine runs on one intake valve per silinder, creating more torque. Above 2 000 rpm the swirl flaps start to open. Thus getting optimum power,smoothness and fuel consumption. By removing the swirl flaps, one reduces the lowdown torque which makes the car using more fuel as you have to accelerate harder to get the same power and using more fuel. A better thing to do is to blank the EGR and stop putting back diesel fumes and carbon into your manifold and engine. It's just my opinion, everyone do as they please.
Have a great day and weekend.

Ps, the reason I removed mine, was to try and sort a rough idle on my car, which was unsuccessful by the way.

Just an update,

been taking some time, been waiting for John to get alluminium in stock and now we are waiting for one of his CNC machines to go free as they are busy.

Once i receive the CNC machined blanks, i will test fit them and if they work we will start taking orders.

Hey Speed Freak

The reason for removing the swirl flaps is to prevent catastrophic damage to the engine and not for performance gains. The tiny screws holding the plate to the shaft sometimes come loose and falls into the motor or the shaft breaks.

I believe the swirl flaps were initially installed to control emissions. The loss of low down torque and increased fuel consumption is true. However the amounts are very slight. On my car i felt it but after a few days all was back to normal.

There is no guarantee that a flap will break but it has happened to many cars before. When i inspected my ones all the screws were tight. However I was not willing to take the risk of them breaking in the future so I removed them.

If you are all that concerned with losing power and having increased fuel consumption I would suggest cleaning out the intercooler, boost pipes and sensors. Then install a downpipe and if you are up for a very slight exhaust note increase, remove the back box also. You will experience significant gains and much much better fuel consumption. Also these methods aid in reviving low down torque.

Ok so here are the cnc swirl flaps i designed. I have 5 sets of 4 blanks 22mm.

Busy stripping off the intake as i type this to fit my set to see if the blanks fit correctly.

Can i see hands of people interested in a set?

Pricing will be discussed soon
