Update time.
I was driving to work on Monday, when I heard and felt a big shock through the car. I looked in my mirror but didn't see anything. I coasted to the side of the road to see if something came loose under the car. When I came to a stop next to the highway I noticed my engine had stalled. I started it again and it idled fine. I got out of the car to inspect everything and all looked fine. I got back in the car and put the car in gear to pull away. Nope... Car was stuck and wouldn't move (as if the handbrake was up). I got out and thought maybe the rear caliper got stuck or something, nope...
I towed the car home and the more I thought about it the more I thought the propshaft flex joint had failed and caused the propshaft to get stuck between the body and something. I jacked the car up, had a look at the propshaft and saw that it looked fine. I then saw that the two wheels could turn independently, while the propshaft remained motionless. Yup, diff broken. :thumbdo:
I eventually got a brand new OEM diff from ZF Germiston for R7410, BMW wanted to charge me R30 000 for the EXACT SAME DIFF!!! Not the same type of diff, but the ACTUAL UNIT I BOUGHT FROM ZF DIRECTLY! WTF.
Anyway, rant over. New diff was fitted and the car is happy again. I need to change the gearbox oil for peace of mind, I don't trust anything on this car I haven't checked myself.
Pics.
And the new diff fitted.
The car is happy again. The guys at ZF are puzzled as they've never seen this failure, the shaft that holds the bevel gears in place managed to come out of the cage and caused the small bevel gears to cause chaos in the diff. The crown and pinion look fine, but the diff is locked so I can't be sure.
I went to dyno the car to see the gains after software. Here is the before and after graph.
Before - 171whp/414Nm
After - 201whp/501Nm
The figures at FR&R are a little low compared to KAR/HM Auto etc, but now I have a good gauge of the gains.
I'll upload the duno video now
Oh yes I forgot, I also fitted the new LCA bushes. Car feels more solid on the road and the knock on the suspension is also a lot quieter. I think its the coilovers that are noisy... Good value for money from GW Delarey. No pics of the bushes as I was working to beat load shedding lol.
