I need to update this thread with pics...

So we went on Dubrun 2015 and the car behaved itself on the way down, returning a frugal 5.8l/100km on the way down and 6.7l/100km/h back up to Jhb with some more spirited driving.

I got engaged that Friday when we got to Ballito. Quite a memorable Dubrun to say the least!

When we got back to Joburg the car started acting funny with the cluster freaking out and needles dipping randomly. I diagnosed the fault to be the voltage regulator and here are the pics of the alternator when I removed it to inspect the regulator. The brushes were fine, the innards of the regulator were failing I suppose and I was seeing betwee 12.2-17+volts. Scary stuff.

New regulator cost me R1140incl and it took me 35mins to remove the alternator, fit the new regulator and re-install everything.

Problem finding...

Wear on the brushes

Showing the length still left in the brushes... They could still have gone a long way.

BMW wanted R2100 for the regulator, so I ordered the same damn thing through an auto electrician for R1140...

The car now holds a constant 13.9/14v. Happy days.

I still need to fit my new solid front LCA bushes. Maybe this weekend.

Looking good Martiens.

What coilovers are you running again?
Maxtrax coilovers, Ill take you for a drive so you can feel how this thing handles and rides. I'm really impressed with them.

Top thread Martin. Thanks for always sharing your findings :clapper:
Thanks Andy! Yeah I have this rides thread to keep track of what's been done to the car etc, and also it gives a good platform for sharing knowledge. Always good to share knowledge because it could save someone lots of frustration and money.

Update time.

I was driving to work on Monday, when I heard and felt a big shock through the car. I looked in my mirror but didn't see anything. I coasted to the side of the road to see if something came loose under the car. When I came to a stop next to the highway I noticed my engine had stalled. I started it again and it idled fine. I got out of the car to inspect everything and all looked fine. I got back in the car and put the car in gear to pull away. Nope... Car was stuck and wouldn't move (as if the handbrake was up). I got out and thought maybe the rear caliper got stuck or something, nope...

I towed the car home and the more I thought about it the more I thought the propshaft flex joint had failed and caused the propshaft to get stuck between the body and something. I jacked the car up, had a look at the propshaft and saw that it looked fine. I then saw that the two wheels could turn independently, while the propshaft remained motionless. Yup, diff broken. :thumbdo:

I eventually got a brand new OEM diff from ZF Germiston for R7410, BMW wanted to charge me R30 000 for the EXACT SAME DIFF!!! Not the same type of diff, but the ACTUAL UNIT I BOUGHT FROM ZF DIRECTLY! WTF.

Anyway, rant over. New diff was fitted and the car is happy again. I need to change the gearbox oil for peace of mind, I don't trust anything on this car I haven't checked myself.

And the new diff fitted.

20150729_171430.jpg

20150729_193746.jpg

The car is happy again. The guys at ZF are puzzled as they've never seen this failure, the shaft that holds the bevel gears in place managed to come out of the cage and caused the small bevel gears to cause chaos in the diff. The crown and pinion look fine, but the diff is locked so I can't be sure.

I went to dyno the car to see the gains after software. Here is the before and after graph.
Before - 171whp/414Nm
After - 201whp/501Nm

20150730_203408.jpg

The figures at FR&R are a little low compared to KAR/HM Auto etc, but now I have a good gauge of the gains.

I'll upload the duno video now

Oh yes I forgot, I also fitted the new LCA bushes. Car feels more solid on the road and the knock on the suspension is also a lot quieter. I think its the coilovers that are noisy... Good value for money from GW Delarey. No pics of the bushes as I was working to beat load shedding lol.

Thanks guys.

I'm looking forward to the dyno day at HM Auto so I can see more accurate figures. FR&R seems to be very stingy (not that it matters), but I'd like to see what the car makes at HM.

Martin, by the time you decide to sell this car, you will be a expert in E90's.

I applaud your efforts in keeping this car and all the DIY you have put in, as well given back to this forum. :clapper::clapper::clapper:

Always a pleasure! The more you know, the better it gets! If I can help out someone in some small way then that would be great.

Nice numbers

Didnt know you get get numbers like that from these cars
The wHp should be closer to 250wHp and 650Nm, I'll have to go to HM Auto to see what the gains are over the stock figures I made there.

The car feels nice and strong on the road though, effortless.

Okay so I went to OBDWorx last night (thanks Gert) and we had a look at why my cd shuttle is dead. Tested the voltage and there is a meager 3.7v in the line... So we checked the wiring and it looks like the problem is at the Junction box/fuse. Yay.

Will tackle it this weekend
