:cry::cry::cry::cry:
Howzit fellow beemers. Some bad news today. Driving home in my 320i f30 msport on the R59 to alberton and suddenly a massive bang en a lot of smoke in the mirror. Engine made a grinding noise and that was it. I thought it was the turbo but after checking the car with the tech that bmw send out. its a "piston rod through the block". I mean WTF!!!!!!!! Car's got 82000km on and engine is blown.
I still have all warranties in place en bmw will have to replace the engine.

anyone here with the same issue ?

Wow, first I hear of a blown F30 320i...
Good news is you get a new engine...
What's the prices like to now get Police clearance on the new engine etc?
Does Bmw do this?

Also big thanks to BMW on call. The service is super. They picked the car and took the car to bmw alberante. They arranged a car for me within 2 hours and delivered a 2014 320i at my house 1 hour ago. So I am feeling positive about the service received so far.:praise:

I don't know what will happen next. will have more info in the morning.
I did not expect this at all. The car is still stock standard and well looked after, well since I bought the car. I bough the car second hand with 79000km on the clock and seemed to be in good condition.

Had a motor replaced on my F30 320i with about 40 000km on the clock. No engines were available so I had to wait about a month for a new one. BMW provided a courtesy vehicle as always and took care of the police clearance as well.

what was the reason for your engine replacement

also, just took the rental 320i f30 for a quick drive and noticed that noise on the injectors is gone. could it be that bmw fixed the injector noise issue on the newer models?

Ok, so bmw confirmed today that its a "factory fault" and that they would replace the engine under warranty. they will take care of the police clearance etc.
Another thing that I confirmed with the mech is that the engine noise was not the injectors but in fact "piston slap" which is why they are stating a factory fault.

should have the car back in 3 weeks.:=):

Eish sounds hectic, sorry man.

On the flip side you get a new engine with 0Kms

I wonder if you will receive the upgraded 320i engine from the Lci F30?

These things happen man, that's what MP is for.

The N20 motor is very good in terms of reliability, but there is always a chance that any motor will break on you

Yoh! Piston rod through the block! That is really scary stuff!

Does anyone know what causes that to happen? Is it that the connecting rod wasn't secured properly or some other reason?

This sounds really scary - a new BMW F30! If it had done just over 100 000km, it would have been off Motorplan and the thought of repairing/replacing an F30 motor would probably cause an owner to drop the BMW brand, along with many others who witnessed that kind of catastrophe!

Thank goodness you are still on Motorplan! 82 000km into the car's life and this happens - if it were a factory fault, how did the motor stay together so long and the problem not picked up during services?

Crazy!

So sorry to hear Bud. As a 2012 F30 320i owner I'm also very concerned - I've seen similar incidents from international forums as well - with the conrads as the main culprit. Was your engine more noisy and intense on some cold starts than normal?

Strongs buddy and please keep us updated.

So here's a breakdown of the history of my car. I'll try to keep it short.

I bought the car from Jeep in boksburg, The previous owner traded the car for a jeep wrangler. I saw the car online while browsing on carfind. I alway wanted a BMW and this one was in good shape.

So the one day I went thru to look at the car and one of the salesmen got the keys for me to check. The interior an all is in excellent condition. The I started the car and naturally the rev a bit higher on cold startup etc. But as soon as the revs cam down to normal I noticed a clucking sound, I told the salesman the car must have been tuned before and I walked out disappointed.
Then I noticed that BMW is right next door so I popped in the ask if this is normal. They informed me that this is normal and this is the injectors making the noise. (I dont think that we where on the same level as to what noise I was talking about.) So I walk back to the jeep dealer and asked to check the car again. Then I started the car and the noise was gone. I take it its because the engine heated up. So long story short I bought the car. Just to be clear. I've driven a lot of car in my life, but this is what I expected from BMW. The ride is just awesome.

Since then every morning I get a loud noise and I was surprised that injector could make such a noise. Drive for 10Km and the car is silent.'
2 weeks ago I went to Welkom and I pushed the car a bit on the highway. But not like a crazy person wanting to break a car. The car was fine. On the monday back in joburg drving home after work I was taking the michelle offramp into alberton and bammmmmm. rod thru block.

After very good service and another bmw f30 to drive while they fix my car, that when I noticed the following.

1. the rental f30 pulls much stonger than my car.
2. on cold start up, the engine is very very very very silent. There is a slight injector noise, but cant compare that to my f30.

So yes, piston slap is the issue. The workshop manager from bmw alberante explained the following.
Piston slap can be heard very clearly on a cold startup and as the engine heats up the piston would expand a little and then sits a little bit tighter in the "sleeve/chamber" That way the noise would go away after the car heats up.

So fellow beemers, here is my advise to you.

1.If you hear a sound and deep inside you know that something is wrong then take your ride in for a check up. Piston slab is def a problem in some bmw's as the X5 next to mine in the workshop just had an engine replacement because of piston slap.

2. if you are still not convinced, go to a dealership and have them start a f30 on the floor and listen if your car make the same or worse noise.
I did this today at alberante and they started a new f30 320i and the car is dead silent.

Thank for all the support and good luck to those of you with possibly the same issue.

I still love my car a lot.:=):

oh yeah, I forgot. the new engine will be here on wednesday and should have the car back next week.

Eish hectic. I just got a June 2014 model with 15000km. During cold start the car sounds a little rough and from the outside is a bit noisey at first. Sounded strange to me
Like there is less oil. Must get it ch3cked out.
