Today's update: First thing this morning I finished up with the oil filter housing gasket. Then replaced the leaking power steering hose. After that I stripped the alternator down and removed the noisy bearings, got replacements from Bearing Man for R150, installed those and reassembled the alternator and reinstalled into the car. Same time I replaced the idler and tensioner pulley and then tackled the tappet cover gasket, it was the original from 2004 which was really impressive. While I was there I installed new spark plugs, old ones all even burning.
Onto pics.

The car feels and drives better every day, seriously enjoying driving her lately. Now that all under the hood is perfectly quiet its even better.:chef:

Small update, did the viscous fan delete on her by removing the aux and viscous fan and installing the manual electric fan. Doesn't sound like an old hilux bakkie anymore!:bravo:

Couple benefits, removing parasitic drag on the engine gives you a few more kilowatts, increases throttle response and decreases fuel consumption. The car drives smoother and quieter than before, shifts are even smoother now, glad I did it.

One last, bman dropped his 2001 325i touring off for service, had to take some pics of the 3 roof rail deleted tourings together.:smilebounce:

This afternoon I cleaned off the remaining mess on the underside of the motor left over from the oil filter housing gasket job and noticed the return water hose has expanded on one end, lucky for me Auto Glen had in stock. Will fit in the morning:=):

Return hose replaced this morning, upon removing the old hose I noticed there was no antifreeze in the coolant so I drained it all and put new antifreeze/distilled water mix into her. PO had silverton radiators fit a new radiator shortly before I got her, guess they forgot to use antifreeze or they have some new clear stuff that Im unaware of....:eek:mgwaiting:

While I was at it I found the crank case vent valve drain tube had perished and was leaking, replaced it with reinforced hydraulic hose for a permanent fix.

Soon. Want to get the steering rack refurbished next to remove the play in it.

Make 100% sure it is the steering rack. I also had play in the steering on my Touring, turned out to be a worn u-joint coupler in the steering column. I replaced that and the vague steering feel disappeared.

Small update, during the week I reinstalled the roof rails to fetch a book case for my wife, ended up not needing to use it as the book case was in kit form like an Ikea set and I assembled it at home. E46Monkey visited yesterday to view the car and is a fan of the roof rails so they will stay for now. Later in the week Yuben will come view the car as both fanatics are after her.

This afternoon's update, I had some spare E46 CD shuttles in the storeroom so I fitted one to the touring, used all the original bolts and fasteners for an OEM install.

Is there an aftermarket cd shuttle cable(uses that input) that can give you Bluetooth and an 3.5mm auxiliary input with these older BMW head units?

I like the look with rails too. I'm thinking of finding another set and trying out a body color match on them to see what that looks like.

I am personally a fan of the roof rails! If I had a white touring I would call her Cremora :fencelook:
