The new M2 leaked...

Unofficially named the G87 M2 (likely though), the all-new 2023 M2 was slated to debut a mere 3 weeks from now.

It has however leaked ahead of this debut, in a rather peculiar colour to match. Seen here in Zandvoort Blue, the all-new M2 features styling similar to it 2 series counterpart. (Not sure if this is a good thing or not yet... but) Unlike its more aggressive looking siblings, the M3 & M4, it retains the same headlights and grills are shaped in the same fashion as the stock cooking 2er.
It does however gain a more aggressive racing style front bumper with square ducting. These styling queues continue at the rear, with the addition of quad exhaust pipes and a very subtle boot spoiler. Finished off with ///M mirrors, lifted from the M3/4, a carbon fibre roof (only offered on the CS previously) and widened fenders all round, to give it the typical ///M stance.

All reports have suggested the G87 M2 will be powered by a detuned version of the S58, packing atleast 450-460Hp. This should still be plenty and a dream in the twisties!

This base model will surely be followed by an M2 Competition, and maybe M2 CS/CSL. We'd ofcourse like to see a CSL though, esp with that old school wing🤪🤪...

We're expecting the official debut to happen on October 11th, so keep an eye out for this! In the mean while, let us know your thoughts in the comments... 💬💬

The front end is *alright* but the rear bumper is horribly odd and bulbous. Another truly bizarre piece of BMW design, I really don't understand, it feels beyond how ugly the cars are now, that there is no uniformity in design. The M3/4 have the huge bucktooth bumper and this has tiny kidney grilles? What is the overarching theme that links this car to that? Weird.

Did the designers use only a ruler when they were creating the lines for this car!! Also, the g80/2 needs the big kidney grilles because of the cooling requirements of the S58 (according to what we were told), so how does this car have small kidneys?

My sentiments too ... I can't BMW going to market with something this FUGLY!!! G80/2 had varying opinions on its styling but this is just horrendous. Nobody in their right mind would want to pay money for this.

Im only here for the comments lol. Remember when everyone was hating on Chris Bangle? Guy was famous for ugly cars when they're actually really pretty now. I somehow dont expect the same for Adrian van Hooydonk who has really been designing some donks lately

the bangle cars have aged well but they still aren't pretty...

There is a limit to how far design can go or this 'belief' that over long periods of time anything will become a classic can be stretched... especially now where it seems these are designed by focus groups rather than the coherent ethos of a designer that may be proven 'correct' over time.

There is also no cohesion in design as there was in every prior generation IMHO. You could love or hate the bangle designs but you KNOW that the cars are of that era. In the van Hooydonk era, I suppose you will know this by the burning feeling in your eyes and soul when you look at them?

Might be biased having owned a bangle era car, but looking back, the first 7 series he did aside, I think the remainder look great.

The 5 and 6 series cars of that era looked quirky then but have aged amazingly well (the exteriors at least!)
The e9x 3 series cars all looked great, perhaps a bit boring in non-msport variety but certainly the M cars and the higher end LCI sedans looked really good
The first gen 1 series was fantastic, most particularly the coupe, but I do like a 3door 130i as well - and those interiors still hold up relatively well, if not in quality then certainly in appearance.

I do think the bangle 7er was a bit much, and hasn't aged particularly well either (though it isn't nearly as ugly as it was made out to be!).

But for the rest I think he designed cars that were both interesting enough, pretty enough and quirky enough. That's a tough gambit - remember a BMW is a mass sale car, this isn't a pagani where it only needs to sell 50 cars to be a success, they need to shift 1000s (more like hundreds of thousands) of cars across the globe to consumers with varying backgrounds.

I've *beeeeeeen* harping on about how crap the M3/4 front end looks (to be fair the normal 4er looks even worse, somehow), but what grates here is the complete lack of cohesive design vision. If you're going buck tooth, then commit. Make the bucktooth look the family look. Instead the M2 looks completely different to the M4, they might as well be from different marques, not from the same brand during the same design era!

The old M2 at least shared clear commonality with the M4 while still being distinct, that sort of "family" design language matters in terms of establishing the brand, it seems like the BMW design department communicate via morse code.

Their marketing machinery will describe the new look as, "aggressive" and over time those with more money than taste or intellect will agree. The era of BMW making cars we actually aspire to own is fast coming to an end.
