Hi guys,

Is it normal for a 2007 Z4M to shake/rattle when the car is switched off? This only happens when the clutch isnt pushed in. It doesnt do this when the clutch is pressed in.

Also theres a ticking sound coming from the engine...Sounds like it goes quicker when I speed up

Sounds normal if coming from the gearbox area. Ticking sound is also common just due to heat build up.

Are you talking about the moment you switch off the engine? If so, then this is most likely just the dual mass flywheel which is perfectly normal.

Your first concern is a strange one as it may point to a dragging clutch.....stabbing in the dark here.

The ticking sound if it has a metallic tone could well be loose valve clearance related.

All sounds quite normal, step on the clutch when you switch off, it should be quiet then.

The ticking is common (not that common is good) and could very well be valve clearance as a1exander mentioned.

My 135i does exactly the same thing when switching the car off with the clutch out and in neutral.

The dealer replaced both my clutch and flywheel initially to resolve it thinking the flywheel was worn. No luck. Eventually they replaced the entire gearbox and the noise is still there.

Researching online it seems to be a very common "issue", but doesn't appear to affect drivability nor signal that something is broken or about to break.

If the rattling sound is bad, the dual mass flywheel is most likely FUBAR.

My Z4 had the same issue and the dealer replaced the DMF and clutch. The rattling when turning off the engine is not completely gone, but is hardly noticable now.

The thing is, switching the engine off with the clutch out is inevitably going to make the dual mass flywheel rattle, or for that matter add to its wear. Best is to push the clutch in when switching off. On all E90's if you do this with the clutch out you will hear this rattle - but not when the clutch is in.

Tested this over the weekend, I think it is the flywheel but agree always try to switch the car off when the clutch is compressed

Regarding the shudder and the rattle on switch off:
I was told it was the shafts on the gearbox, when in neutral, are not directly connected to the driveline, hence are oscillating, causing the noise.

Mine has been doing it since I got it, and it has been 50 000km since. I was told to ignore it....

That makes a lot of sense too.
