So can we safely say they only good for 100K km? Anyone had failures and at what KM's, what its the mean time before failure?

It is difficult to say, because reported cases of bearing failure around the world have a large variance in mileage terms. I personally believe it has a lot to do with how the car has been driven during its lifetime, in other words, how often the car has seen redline (even at operating temp).

So it tends to end up being a case of probability based risk. At 100 000km, there is a chance that you could run bearings. Above 150 000km, the risk is considerably higher. But no one really knows for sure I guess..

Then we all know of 200k+ cars that are still going strong. It's a crap shoot really. Best is to replace them and make peace with it...

This weekend I will have a 160K car come in for bearings (the silver SMG you did software upgrades on Gert) so it will be interesting to see the wear on that one.

A few more pics........

Here is a pic f the VAC bearings

Had to change this

because it caused this

As always, top class Peter.

As for bearings, as I understand the red line was reduced on the Z cars running the S54, and that reduced the recorded failures.. So, it can be assumed that if the car was driven under normal conditions, or the owner, being aware of the risk, limited the use of RPM to 7000.. then theoretically one should not have a issue for many many miles..

But, who now drives a M3 like a VW Polo.

My 2c

Only the Z3. And those ACS ones are so few, their numbers are almost negligible.

Z4 has an 8k redline just like the M3

Right, OK so pretty much up to the owner's driving habits then.

This.

There is a general mentality in South Africa of "it is an M3, it is supposed to be driven hard, and it can handle it." This tends to be done with an inherent lack of mechanical sympathy.

Dying to see what the bearing look like...

I am on my original bearings and only time i remember that I want to change then is as the needle passes 7000rpm... And I brace for the bang.:hammerhead:

AdiS on the left Lysis on the right
6 top 1 bottom

My observation is that in 20000kms the wear accelerates exponentialy.

Adrians had 92000 and Alexander 114000

how are these arranged in the pic? The 12 shells on the left are Adis, and the next 12 are Lysis?

Either way, Another good save!

Exactly like that.
Left side 12 AdiS with extreme left being the bottom half shells.
Extreme right are Lysi's bottom half shells.

Ahhhh very interesting... The effect of gravity, and the oil lubricating the bottom shells better than the top!
