X35 FUEL ECONOMY CHALLENGE

For the last few months my 335 fuel consumption was a big concern. Turned out to be a few leaking injectors and a bad O2 sensor which were replaced by BMW under motorplan a few weeks ago. Besides the high fuel consumption the other tell tale sign was hesitation on wide open throttle (WOT) between 3000 to 4000 rpm.

Obviously after the repair at BMW the :joy: of smooth acceleration set in and the right foot was trigger happy and kept me  Anyways, I decided to conduct a little experiment to see what was the best fuel economy figures I could achieve after filling up on Sunday morning. The figures achieved was with mixed short and long trips in traffic and on freeways. Even on the shorter trips I managed to keep the fuel consumption below 10 liters per 100 km

Now the X35 was never designed to be frugal which fuel but let's see who can achieve the best figures

Here's mine

That is seriously impressive. My best so far is 10.6 but that is a long trip to Hilton and back followed by very conservative driving thereafter.

My best on a short 95 km drive back from George smooth was 7.2 or something of the sort, it is documented in the thread. After that was the drive to durbs, 8.8l. Then I met Kish and consumption was never the same again, bad influence :D:D:D:p

Its difficult to resist the urge to plant the throttle to the floor on the X35 as she loves to be driven hard

My best in town was 8,8l/100km with no highway driving. It was against traffic though. Haven't tried much since I added some more mods :D

wow, thats impressive. I think I could improve consumption further if I took the 20's off and slapped on some 18's msport. Even my OEM 19's that the car came with will improve the consumption. Will do further testing when I swop the rims again.

wheels make a beeg differece, my 19's are not msport wheels and are over 2.5kg heavier at each corner. My consumption has dropped over a litre per 100km with mixed driving.

After my purchase i realised my 18in msports where the lightest wheel in the E60 range, including some 17's and even the M5 wheels...

Look if you really want to get 8.1 or below, I can make you an offer.
Lets swap, you take my 330d and never go above 7.4l/100km and i take the fuel hungry demon of your hands.

As tempting as those tractors are with their fuel economy and insane torque I could not live without the sweet symphony that the BMW straight six churns out through the exhaust
