Witch getting stripped and fixed

So with the help of my Hayens manual, (thanx flash) I started yesterday at stripping the witch so to get an estimate on the damage and either get it fixed or fix her myself.

Some photos of work.

Viscus fan and upper intake manifold removed

Found the butterfly arm that broke off, it is the butterfly in the lower intake manifold and the screw holding the butterfly to the arm and about a 15mm piece of the arm seems to have gotten into the motor.

Also removed the spark plugs and got a lot of oil on plug nr 3 and 4, everything still turns like it should. Also got the lower intake loose and up but cant get it out, I think it is the wiring harnas that is in the way, can see 2 wires on I think the starter and then I think the other goes to the back of the alternator but cant see how to get it loose.

How I left it for the time being, will probably work on her again on Friday or the weekend.

Did put the top cover back in place as to prevent stuff falling into the crankshaft.

I will also have to do some serious cleaning before it gets put back together.

Can see the oil in the intake, as well as the build up inside the head and head cover

Thats it for now.

Will keep updated as things progress.

So far well done.

I am now subscribed to your thread.

Small tip use it or not.
Keep containers and only put stuff that is related into them.
You may land up with many but come assembly time it is easier.

To clean aluminium use Prepsol and oven cleaner. Do not leave oven cleaner on the aluminium to long and use a brush to agitate once applied.

Once you take out the cam followers(hydraulic lifters) mark them in their separate container and check the flat surface and clean them. When ready to assemble immerse them in clean oil for a few hours prior to installing them in the head.

Thanx

As for parts if I unscrew something after removing what it bolts down i put the nut or bolt back in place.

so far all the bigger parts are in the boot but will need another storage space for them as the other parts come out.

Any advice is always welcome.

Bruce Im sure the forum can help you out with fixing this... I know we want to see it run again :)

like a1exander says make sure you have marked containers or bags for each parts fittings... Valve cover parts should be together ect... you car going to end up with plenty nuts and bolts to get the head off... you dont want to get stuck at the end trying to figure out what goes where :yuck:

Only advice I can give is be particularly careful during reassembly with the timing chain.
The last person who worked on my car didnt set it properly and it cost me a new engine. R91000.00 later.

If you get stuck there's a guy in Kortdoorn, Leon I think, that does some good work on BMW's.
Alternatively the guy at the bottom of my street is very reasonable, both do great work and are conveniently walking distance from home.

Just a thought but I know sometimes these things get the better of us.

Thanx for all the support guys.

Like I said only trouble Im having now is the wiring harnass that ontop of the lower intake manifold. Dont know where the cables go to get it out of the way. But so far so good.

Hoping to pull the head of by end of this coming weekend so I can see the damage done on cylinder nr 3.
And will also need to drain the oil as to get the broken parts out. Might have to remove sump to maoe sure I got everything.
