Wings and Wheels

Guys, the Wings and Wheels even is happening at Ysterplaat AFB in December. We would like to outdo the Audi guys who have been given notable presence at the event. The best way for us to do this is by getting as many people round with BMW apparel etc. and show them why BMW rocks.

We will put up details closer to the time as well as on the BMW CT Car Club Facebook page, so please do keep an eye open for this!!

I've been toying with attending this for a while! Planes and Cars all rolled together! Two of my favorite things on this planet!

The m5 with her turbine wheels will fit in nicely with the planes.

I will be back for this... barely!!!

Come on, we can make a concerted effort for this!! I was there last year an it is a blast!! NO BMWs were there last year (none I noticed at least). The clubs get to screw around on the taxi ways between displays... parade style. Lambos kicking it.

Photo shoots with the planes.

Carbon; Bugger

Are we going to try and have an official presence at Wings and Wheels? Last time the official clubs got to do a parade where the cars got to hoon it down the taxi way in front of the crowds.

So we are trying to make it an official BMWCCCT event with banners and everything. We have been given a slightly bigger stand so we may be able to get more cars in. And Steve, no, you can't hog the limelight with all your cars....lol...
We will put up some more communication as we receive it and get finer details on our stand. The MINI guys are joining us so we should have a good BMW AG presence at the event. I know the Audi guys are taking it quite seriously, so I think we should do our utmost to be seen. I will talk to Carbon about this and make sure we are well represented.

The event has been cancelled. The order came through from Pretoria yesterday. A press release still needs to be done with reasons.

MEDIA STATEMENT

DATE: Wednesday, 27 November 2013

EMBARGO: None

SUBJECT: CANCELLATION OF AIR FORCE BASE YSTERPLAAT AIR SHOW: 07 AND 08 DECEMBER 2013

The SA Air Force’s vision is “An Air Force that Inspires Confidence”. Its desired strategic outcomes are to be ready for conceivable contingencies, to be able to sustain its capabilities and operations, to reduce safety risks to as low as reasonably practicable, to comply with the regulatory framework, and to maintain a positive image.

The compliance to pertinent security measures and planned arrangements that are underpinned by approved regulatory policies & Standard Operating Procedures is indispensable for staging such a major activity on the Air Force Base.

In line with government initiatives, the Air Force earlier this year instituted austerity measures, which included the scaling down of Air Shows. The impact of these measures on the viability and nature of the ‘Wings and Wheels’ Air Show planned at Air Force Base Ysterplaat was not anticipated.

After a due diligence review of the arrangements for the show, and several attempts at corrective action, the Air Force command found it difficult to reconcile the planned show with the Air Force’s Vision and Strategic outcomes.

The Air Force command consequently decided that there was no option but to cancel the Air Show.

They only figure out that the airshow doesn't fit in with their vision and strategic outcomes 1 week before an event?:thumbdo:

Good luck trying to ever do something like this again, no-one will risk investing when they pull the plug a week before an event.

I feel for the staff at Ysterplaat. They really look forward to these events and have Pretoria screw it up at the last minute.

The short and the tall of it is this. The Air Force does not have money to operate. Less than 10% of their aircraft are actually flying, with billions of rands worth of aircraft sitting in hangars and on runways rotting away. They probably couldn't afford the fuel to put planes in the air for the show. It is a well known fact that if we were invaded by Lesotho our Air Force would not be able to do a thing, as they are literally inoperable (save for flying Mr Zuma and his cronies around). My wife's uncle worked for the Air Force for 30 years, he told me that our Air Force has become the laughing stock of the SA armed forces, cos they're more like a grounded force. That's why so many air shows in SA are private.
It's a pity it's been cancelled. But Clownshoe is right, the likelihood of there being corporate sponsorship for such an event again is remote. Once bitten, twice shy.
