Windscreen replacement (BMW with HUD)

I've got a crack on my X5 windscreen which is about 20cm long. Before I contact my insurance, just thought I'd check here first. Anyone have a windscreen replaced on a BMW with Heads-up-display? Apparently, there is a different windscreen for BMW's with HUD's. Also, I've got the electrochromatic rear view mirror and auto wipers which apparently have sensors behind the mirror - Hence, my guess is that the car would need to go to the dealer for a replacement windscreen and not the "average windscreen specialists".

Opinions???

Any guesstimates on costs too. I'm covered by insurance, but curious to know what it would cost...

My E46 had rain sensors and was swopped out by Glassfit which did a 100% perfect job. The sensor sits behind the mirror stalk and isn't attached to the windscreen in any manner.

Had mine replaced on my E92 by glassfit no issues, cost is dependant on your insurer, I had to pay a 20% excess which I think worked out to be around R2000 at the time.

I will be replacing soon too. The road works on the M1 has riddled the windscreen with big chips and smaller cracks.

My X5 also has HUD and rain sensor (behind the mirror). I got PG Autoglass to replace it, but specified that they use an OEM windscreen which they did. Use the VIN to order the windscreen from BMW to make sure you get the correct type. It cannot have the green sunshade at the top or the rain sensors won't work.

IIRC the cost to insurance was around R20k.

BTW, the dealers don't replace the glass themselves, they also get PG or Glasfit to do it, but supply the OEM windscreen of course.

I had the X6 windscreen replaced a few months back
Mine also has the HUD, and like you said its a different windscreen to the normal one because of that

As blue shirt said, use your VIN etc at BMW to get the correct part number

PG autoglass were useless when it came to my claim, waited 10 weeks cos they were so lazy and slack and kept forgetting to place the order, then they came and it wasnt BMW OEM so I chased them away, then they eventually got my OEM one.

I actually got them the part number and quote from BMW and took it to them so they wouldnt make a mistake

Cost from BMW was R10 700

Cost from PG autoglass for insurance was R11 900

Thanks for the input guys

Contacted Glasfit today. They confirmed that they will order the windscreen from BMW - they asked for my VIN to verify the correct windscreen type.

For those interested, the replacement windscreen was R13.5k.

Where did you go to msm?

I need to replace mine too. Want to know if they did a good job or not.

Went to Glassfit in Midrand. They did a good job. I checked the seals afterwards and you cannot make out that it was changed.

Also had a peek at the original invoice from BMW. Windscreen was from BMW Menlyn and invoice to Glasfit was just over R8k ex vat.

Did they replace the windscreen rubber too?
