Why I loss against an e46 330i: Problem fixed

Was wondering for many months about this loss. (Bad loser)
The run with each shift was in the right gear, shifts were great and the 330 stock, so with the 120 turbo diesel & the chiplogic tune, I should have had this one in the bag:

I noticed more recently that even against the Hyundia, the 120d was struggling and first gear became a tricky affair because the car felt edgy and difficult to get off the line but worst was the drop in power at high rpms...but the drop in power was not drastic...the power was just not there as the rpms begin to climb. Last month, I happen to open the cubby storage "while driving" to take out my sunglasses and I heard a hissing sound coming through the cubbyhole. :fencelook:

Very unusual, I thought. Stopped and opened the bonnet but could not see anything. Took the car to BMW Donford the next day and asked them to trace the hiss...

What we found explained the power losses and subsequent first gear hickups:

The chargepipe had various cracks of different sizes on all sides. The second rubber sleeve near the throttle body were literally hard baked. The car were obviously losing power for many, many months but I just did not notice:

I was also concerned about all this muck in the flow pipe, affecting the performance of the trubo:

The pipe cost about R4,500 but it solved the first gear unpredicatable, jumpyness and pulls rather nicely again through the rev range without any noticable loss of power.

Two things I am thinking about now:

1. The dirty turbo may not last long...:bangdesk:

2. Where is that girl with the e46 330 that kicked my ass and yes, I hope it is still stock...

R4.5k for that piece of pipe, good to know that BMW is not slipping with their ridiculous part prices, sheesh.

And I was about to say, power loss at high RPM, isn't that because its a diesel.

The stealer prices are truly pathetic. :nonono:

Yip, a diesel or turbo car is not the free or high reving type...! But the tune changes all that. It takes the lazyness away and hit the redline (when you hold it) and ticks over with a woosh...

My X3 20d does not behave like this but i am sure a lekker chippie will change this

Face it folks...

Modern diesels are cheaper to run, have less moving parts, simplier in construction, offers the same performance if not better then the petrol....

Tis the way to go....

according to AA rates a 330i is 10c per km cheaper to run than a 330d... so its not that bad yet...

Before this turns into another diesel vs petrol discussion, diesel has pros and cons, petrol has pros and cons, deal with it.

So it comes down to preference.

Maybe not as conclusive, was watching a local motoring show and one of the journo's stated that local sales figures for diesels in the passenger segment were on the decline???

At the risk of another diesel vs petrol discussion, I have to agree with sank, and end this one with "I like cheese"... and call it a day :)

So what you are really saying is that petrol is the best? :fencelook:

lol I just have to ask this its not a diesel vs petrol debate... but I havent had the chance to take on a e46 330i so if the 120d wouldve had it in the bag.... then a 330d shouldnt even bother wasting time :fencelook: correct me if I am wrong

Heheee...the 330d should certainly not bother if the owner in question pitches with his N20 loaded 335i :tease:
