Does the smoke appear immediately on start up or after the car has been idling for a couple of seconds?
Exhaust vapour can also appear as "white smoke" which i suspect may be the case. If so, this is perfectly normal.

That is an easy answer.

You have a blown thingymagig on the left hand side of the rear tyre valve.....OR as is more commonly known....condensation out of the exhaust :)

My E46 also does this on the first start especially on colder months or on rainy days . In summer there is nothing :=):

my car only when temps dropped below 5 would smoke like a steam train in the mornings, the whole car was covered in white smoke once the exhaust tunnel had warmed up,

was quite a sight

was even funnier when the 330d next to me was doing the same thing, i can only imagine what people would think seeing that

Had the issue, but my car did it all the time hot or cold, whenever I start up or get on the throttle

turned out to be valve stem seals - hopefully not the case for you
