A e39 m5... A minter can be had for 140 to 180k.

A minter is closer to the R200k mark. Ask me how I know. And that's if you can find one...

The M5 is really heavy on fuel though, but an awesome car.

That depends on the driver.

Mine is sitting on 12.4

That is mostly highway driving, correct? My Cons2 is also around that mark, and Cons1 around 18.6 from the last fill up 3 weeks ago.

It's mixed driving. Was up at 15ish after some spirited driving last night. And got it down on my drive to work this morning.

I agree that it is heavy on fuel (not bad at all for a 5L V8 though) but what I meant was that how heavy it is depends on the driver.

This just underlines what I tried to say in another thread. I tried to explain that no matter how you look at it, big petrol engines are HEAVY on fuel. Yes they are powerful, but they GUZZLE.

Then a couple of people responded that due to new technology we can have the best of both worlds etc, etc.

let's assume an average person drives 2000 km/month. My car will use in the region of R1500 of fuel.

An M5 will use R3600 of fuel for the same distance. More than double.

A 335i will use around R2400.

Yes, it has improved with technology...a lot. But you still pay a premium. No way around that.

I'm not trying to be harsh or critical here. The reason I post this, is because I do not want people who are considering buying a big petrol BMW to be misled.

If you buy a car with a big performance petrol engine you will PAY in terms of fuel consumption.

Are the newer engines more efficient, and therefore more economical than in years past? --- Yes

Are they in any way comparable to smaller diesel or even the f30 320i ? - No.

I'm not saying there is anything wrong with these big engined performance cars. They are great cars in their own way and in their own right. If you can afford it, and really love the performance, you should definitely buy one. Just...please, don't try and convince someone they are light on fuel.....

I think that if you buy an M car and think its going to be fuel efficient then you're seriously misled. HOWEVER fuel efficiency is relative. An E39 M5 with a 5L V8 could be more efficient than another similar vehicle. Then one could say than compared to XYZ the M5 is fuel efficient... Thats my take.

Sorry... I can't hear you over the sound of my V8

Fact is, we have derailed this thread a little. What it all comes down to is that this fine gentleman should buy an M... Coz Racecar!

I disagree. The M5 and my ex 1-er (N54) has the same fuel consumption with me driving. So to get the 335 to use less fuel than the e39 M5, you WILL have to drive slower, or they will consume more or less the same amount of fuel. The 335i is heavy on fuel. Full Stop. With similar driving styles, they will give you similar consumption.
If you want a fuel efficient car, buy a 320d. Even the 330d is not as efficient as one would think, especially on short distances in traffic.

i can throw my e39 530d around and drive it like an absolute lunatic and i still manage 8.0 litres per 100km. thats 12.5km per litre.
or otherwise known as 1300 CHICO GOLF consumption.

manual 530d has 0-100 in the 7seconds region. its quick.

not m5 quick obviously. but way quick enough.

but again im saying, its old tech. enter m57d30t2(correction)
and you have 210kw and 540nm of torque. and still you will get your 8litres per 100.

you wont understand till you go test drive a turbo diesel. it has LOW down torque that you will never get from a petrol. for daily driving this matters more than KW.

I 110% agree with your last paragraph. I too was a petrol head and could feel inkantla fuel eating away at my hard earned money. Then I went and drove a e90 330d and a F30 320d. My response was WOW and today I drive a diesel. I was able to afford the F30 320d due to its light fuel consumption. The e90 330d is my second option if i could not afford the F30. The F30 handling is better than the e90. The gearbox is magic. And i have a longer motorplan as bonus. If you can find an e90 330d with low mileage then I would go for it. I don't know how much you have to spend. I can guarantee you that you will at least half your fuel cost per month you are currently using and you can rather use that money on paying extra a month on a diesel car. Go drive a E90 and for fun an F30.

In the end as one of the forum members said to me is that you have to think sensible for what your needs are and what you can afford. Yes we would all love an M5 M3 or 335i or 135i. Remember on those M cars if something brakes and you not under motorplan I feel sorry for you.

Think sensible is all I say. The choice is yours and you have to be satisfied with your car.

Chris you have an good idea on what an F30 is capable of on pull away due to our private testing in the past :=): Remember what is your main purpose of your car. If you have lots of money then you buy a second race car is my opinion.
