Surely the gearbox is about to go Kaboom!

Ya dont know about a e60 M5 going for R180 000. That just smells like trouble.

Maybe I dont like Diesels because ive only driven automatic ones.

There is however another option...

Drive my car for another year to year and a half (get almost nothing for it) but then maybe look at a e92 m3? Not too keen but still a thought

Engine on these cars, as far as i know, are quite solid so with love and care it will hopefully last a long time.

A friend of mine with a fully loaded G5 Gti DSG was kind enough to show it to me this weekend and allow me to test drive it for a bit.

I must say I can see the appeal of it and why there are more Gti's on the road than normal Golfs.

BUT...being used to driving rear wheel drive cars all my life, even my Porsche (Beetle) was rear wheel drive, it was very weird and a bit uncomfortable driving a car where all the power is going to the front and you are using it to steer.

I felt so bad pushing the car to its limit. When the 2.0lt starts revving up high I started to feel too sorry for the engine. Taking my car to the limit at 7000RPM feels like it wants it and its just asking me to do everytime I step behind the wheel. Maybe im just used to the inline 6 scream.

The Gti is a nice place to be and I think every owner of one is very happy with theirs. I cannot comment on modded ones. Im sure its a different beast.

But getting back into my 15 year old car after some spirited driving in the Golf just felt... awesome. It just feels BMWish. Just more exciting. (PS. and mines faster )

Im reviving this thread. Was really tempted, and I still am and still looking, at a 135i or 335i or e46 M3.

As im planning to maybe buy my own place next year its time to use my head and not my heart.

Im looking for something thats light on petrol, looks good and has a bit of grunt.

Been looking for something in the R100 000 - R140 000 range.

Unfortunately all the e90 330d are high mileage. Seems the only BMW at that price with low mileage is the 1 series. Even Z4's at that price are either high mileage or 2.0 or 2.5lt.

Anyone with some advice?

Honestly Chris,

Keep the 328i and run that while you get settled in a new place and further your career. The 328i has the grunt you want, you have put shitload of money into it to make it yours, and consumption is not that bad if you dont drive it like you stole it all the time.

Getting something that is light on fuel and newer just adds an extra payment on top of payments for the new place.

Just a very simplified monthly expense example:
4000 rent
2000 fuel
6000 total

as opposed to

4000 rent
2000 new car
1000 fuel
7000 total

Hehe, I thought you were gonna jump in and say I should rather take the white M5.

I hear what you saying. Only reason I am contemplating this is that the car currently has 285 000km on it. At this stage im basically replacing everything to make it brand new.

So its only the high mileage that bothers me.

And the fact that im itching for something new

I was going to. But then I though I should probably use my head and not my hardon. I mean heart.

285k should not worry you too much as long as you stay on top of the important maintenance.

My 318is lasted to almost 500k and I sold my 325i with 305k on the clock. Mileages like these are nothing to these engines provided they are cared for.

I know the itch you speak of, but that is a heart itch, or crabs...

HIGH MILEAGE ? what. she's only just RUN IN.

and now to give you some real world CONCRETE Examples.

at 241 000 km, my ex e30 325i made factory rated power. 125kw and 225nm on the castrol mobile dyno. that same day, another bloke with a e30 325i also did a dyno run, he had 480 000km or thereabout. his readout was WITHIN 5% of mine.

my ex e32 730i. at 282 000km still made 152kw odd on dynotech's dyna. its factory spec is 160kw.

forget about silly factory maintenance schedules. CHANGE THE OIL every 10 000km... and high mileage wont be a problem. if you throw the car around it can excite wear on suspension components but thats it...

a bmw wants to be driven hard...within reason and never when ice cold.
