That car was conceived well before my time. Definitely an icon, but one I don't have much of a connection with. There was a lady I used to see in Australia every morning with one though, so understated that you could mistake it for a normal 5 - that was the point ofcourse.

The most beautiful M car to me is the e28 M5.
The one I enjoy most in driving, but a little problematic and expensive to maintain = e39 M5

And the e34 M5 is a blend between these 2 that I personally find just about perfect, but then again I am bias.

If the e46 CSL had a proper gearbox, it would have been no.1 on my list

Without a doubt..

An E46 M3 CSL
With an E60 M5 V10 swap,
A manual box from an E92 M3.
And an eisennman zorst.

The day I win the lotto will be the day my M3 will consist of the above
:inlove::inlove:

Otherwise the E39 M5 is my all time favorite.

Experience sways my vote to the E46 M3 :praise:

It is close between the E36 M (2dr) and the E46 M - having owned the E46 but never driven the E36 makes it the easier choice. I think the newer cars lack that "special" ingredient to make them truly sought after and demand attention like the old ones do. :fencelook:

That being said, I would come close to killing for a 1M

I have never really liked the bigger cars but do appreciate their performance characteristics.

The E30 for me is excluded because I would prefer a Ford Cosworth from that era :sorry:

1. M1
2. E24 M635csi
3. M3 CSL
4. E39 M5 (mine)
5. Z3 MCoupe S54 (mine)

M1 review on top gear is the only modern review I have seen and i was struck by how usable they said it was for a 70s supercar.

Modern M cars seem to sanitised. The E90 M3 is faster than the MCoupe (way faster) but it felt too smooth... just my opinion.
