330D's are amazing, one of the best all round packages out there. 330i's are awsome when they get into their stride, just keeps pulling all the way.

I have heard on the E90 forum that chipping a 330i overs minimal gains, they reckon upgrading the exhaust, manifold and some work on the head offers greater gain...not sure how true that is...has anyone done this in SA??

I took on a few 330d's in the past, from the 330d E46's to the 330d E90, and I can tell you, those 330d E90 are superfast off the lines. Now i love my car to death, but I have to confess that up to around 100km/h the 330d would SERIOUSLY kick the 330i ass.
I outrun the E90 330i, and the 330d made me feel kak the way it pulled away, and it was an automatic, not a manual 330d. It comes down to driver, and what you want, cause I would love a 330d, but I hate the diesel sound and smell, and it would have to be an auto, and still under motorplan. :)

Definitley 330d especially at highveld and this would be my choice from E46 to E90 LCI. Although with the E46 I did a couple of drags with my brother he was driving the e46 330d and I was driving the e46 330i and everytime up to around 160 he was ahead half a car length and for midrange kick down acceleration the 330i had no chance at all (btw this is all at highveld).

But at the end of the day its a personal choice, the 330d feels quicker because of the torque, the 330i sounds better. And the biggest deciding factor when it comes to drags is driver skill, I mean even with a 320d steptronic with the DTC deactivated, left foot on the brake + 2000rpm then letting go, it launches like a rocket and if ur racing a 330i steptronic that does a normal kickdown pulloff it will take quite a while before it leaps ahead.

To summarise:
-Altitude
-Driver skill
-Gearbox

Take the turbo off the 330d then compare it to the 330i, NA vs NA

+1

Compare apples to apples, not badges to badges (if that makes sense)

The equivalent comparative petrol model to the 330d is the 335i, and not the 330i.

Both (330d/335i) are now single turbo 3.0l engines. Only difference is one is a petrol and the other is a diesel.

Sabre, not sure which 330i you have but Arbee had his E46 330i saftwared and exhaust and it sounds and goes amazing!

@aZZ_kIkR I have a 2007 E90 330i, still under motorplan so kinda dont want to mess that up with mods, any ideas on minor mods that wont void the motorplan?

330d for performance + economy
330i for the sound

Should you compare these 2 cars? :blab: Yeah why not? Its like saying, can you compare a RS3 to a 1M? (one is 2.5ltr single turbo the other is a 3ltr with 2 turbos) Of course you can. We are not comparing how each engine is made and what you put in them. Just an overall similar package.

Betweeen the 2 (and I live in Dbn) I would choose 330d

330d is the better option, but the sound of the 330/130 is just amazing.
if only they could make a diesel that sounded that way

Replace the cat with a downpipe, 63mm back to front, remove all the boxes bar one 400mm box at the rear and you get a deep sounding diesel.

guys you got to compare apples with apples

The 330i is a 3 litre 6
the 330D is a 3 litre 6 turbo so its actually a 3.5 or even a 3.8 so to get an accurate comparisong you need to compare it with the equivilent size Petrol engine

Its like comparing the 320i with the 320d. Or even a 330i with a 335i you cannot.
You cannot compare the same size turbo engine with the same size non turbo

Top gear did a good test the 535d against the 545i thats more reasonable and they were pritty close 545i won though but was a lot more expensive.

Sorry to say stock for stock the 330d will always win.
