Whats resale value like on a Mazda though? A lot of people over look this when buying a car, and I dont want to be caught off-guard. A second hand X3, for example, has already suffered the bulk of its depreciation. A new Mazda CX-5 could leave me blind sided by resale value in a few years time.

Check the classifieds bud. Maybe look at a demo or 1-2 year old CX5.

The CX5 is the best selling Mazda model in SA.
I picked up my car as a few month old demo (6,000km) in Mar 2016 for R300k. My car is now 2.5 years old and at 50,000km. A quick search on Autotrader shows cars of my vintage retailing for over R250k.

That is pretty decent depreciation.

I am in the exact same boat as you, with regards to getting a new daily in a similar budget. Will be looking to purchase sometime in Q1 next year, interested to see what choice you make - only caveat for me, it needs to be an SUV/SAV, as my SO will use the car as well.

I have 3 main choices (<3 years old and balance of plan):
VW Tiguan
Mazda CX5
Nissan Qashqai

My only issue is, I can't step away from the BMW stable, even though that means a slightly older model. I really like the F25, X3 Motorsport (I know that this kit sort of negates any off-roading, which suits me fine). Chances are I will end up in a BMW with the tail end of plan and will then maintain myself.. Would like a 3.0d but for my purposes, a 2.0d would do fine as well.

Unless you going extreme off-roading, the X3 in M sport is very capable on rugged terrain.
