What to look out for? I am looking at purchasing a f10 520d

Hi everyone,

Would really appreciate any input for any f10 520d owners, thank you in advance!!

I am looking at buying a 2012, 520d,f10. With between 100k kms on the clock to 150k km's on the clock.
I would appreciate any advice on the following;
-running costs
- tyres costs
-how much a tank costs
- what the range on a diesel tank is on these vehicles. From my research, I should be getting about 900km on a single tank of diesel. But unsure, would like to get "real world" figures.

Really appreciate the assistance in this regard in advance:)

Hi. Running cost would be your normal oil change, preferably at 10,000km. This would depend on the type of oil, but its not much. As for tyres, this would be depend on the make, type (RFT or not) and size. As for the tank, thats just the price of fuel x the size of the tank. Fuel consumption would also depend on the driving conditions but they are generally light on fuel. Should average 6l/100 easily on the open road. Get the damper pulley checked and change the transmission oil at ZF.

You may get a newer F30 320d for the same price as an F10.
What is the main attraction of the F10 over the F30 for your needs?

So my thi king is the luxurious feel and I like the bulky body. But mostly just like the look. Need to check up on the 320d. Will have a look.

But would you recommend a 320? I hear they are heavy on juice!! Is that correct?

What Yush has mentioned is basically all you need to worry about.

They are extremely good reliable cars, very light on fuel consumption, not bad on maintenance.

My opinion is, dont think twice, do it and the F10 is way more "bang for buck" compared to an F30

Yes, correct. Thanks for the plug.

So - you're going to want to make sure that you have the N47T engine and not the N47 engine. This is the more robust variant of the motor without the timing chain and guide issue(s). With that model - I assume it will be the N47T.

Car is very light on fuel and it's weird how it doesn't feel under-powered for its size (and baby motor). I get between 5-8l/100km depending on driving conditions (traffic etc). My first tank returned 700km. Every other tank returned about 850-1000km (mixed driving, traffic, heavy right foot here and there).

I have the ugly 18" wheel (rear is a 275 profile) and it seems that it's quite hard to find a store that has these tyres in stock (at this moment, in Durban, at least). I was quoted R2600 for non RFT Toyo tyres (each). The Michelin Primacy 3 that I have on the rear (RFT) is about R6000 each. If you have the 19" then I'm not sure if the green tyres apply to you and you may have to get "sport" tyres (ie. Pilot Sport)

Overall, it is a lovely car and you don't feel its size (except when in parking lots lol). If you want a comfy ride , and not too worried about sportiness, or a smaller, more agile, car, then its miles ahead of the F30. The premium feel and creature comforts inside the cabin constantly remind you that you picked the "better" car.

I drove my A4, after a while of having the F10, (and I really like that car) and was like wtf is this shit. The interior suddenly felt "cheap" and everything was so close to me. It just didn't have those finishing touches that you get with the F10 (and yes I know this car is in a different segment). You also realize how much more ergonomically inclined the F10 is.

Buy it, service it, service the box, check the dampener pulley, smash downpipe and remap. Sorted :smilebounce:

Once you've owned and lived with a 5er you'll understand. A 3er simply does not compare.

Flip that sounds awesome!!! I will definitely be chatting to you more, just before I buy it in the next two months or so.

I think the other thing is, compared to other cars in its segment, there were less complaints about the f10 and they look like they can stand the test of time hahaha. I would like to hold onto it for a while and use it as my daily.
700kms on a full tank, as i understand they have a 61l tank. Not bad for such a big car. I am planning to go and test drive one soon. Any recommendations on dealers?

There are a few flaws with the car (as with any vehicle).

What I've noticed so far:

1. Drivers seat creak/squeak. Common issue and can be fixed. Didn't get to it yet. Not really audible when the radio is on.
2. Passenger seat belt rattle. Happens when the belt is along the side of the seat - and not on the bolster (no passenger inside the car).
Very annoying.
3. Average implementation of Ambient Lighting (I say average because while it's not bad, it isn't exactly good either...).

Tank is 70l so yes the 700km range was pretty bad. However that was on Sport mode the entire time and flooring the car (even in stupid small stretches :fencelook: ). On average I get around 6.5l/100km with mixed driving and conditions so overall it is great for its size.

Keep us updated. Not sure about dealers but you can PM VINs to @Coisman and he will be able to assist with the history and integrity of the vehicle. The mechanics and rest of it will be up to you

All the general stuff has been covered, but personally I prefer the size and features of the bigger brother over the 3 series, especially in the entry to mid level derivatives.

The more refined sounds when closing doors or going over bumps, or something as simple as closing the boot and bonnet is something that I prefer.

My wife has the X1, while it is a great vehicle in many respects, i still feel BMW cut more corners and considered budget over features.

@nelf10 if you are looking for a good clean F10 520d I am trading in my wife’s one tomorrow at Cedar Isle Auto, 2014 with 59 500km on the clock and motorplan expires in September but can still be extended for a further 2 years, it has a few nicks and scratches but the dealership will fix those before they resell, pm me your details if you are interested I will pass it onto the salesman, my wife uses the car daily to Joburg cbd from Midrand it runs at 6.8l/100km, she gets 1200km on a full 70 litres,
