What to buy: E46 or E90

My opinion is they both have their weaknesses in build quality.

But you can't say an e90s shocks lasted x and my e46s lasted x + y. That is not build quality. That comes down to driving style and road conditions.

Talking about interior though, both like I said have their positives and negatives. E46s door panels at the top wear flat and so do the grab handles. E90s does not have this problem as its not a layer of vinyl.

E90s plastic paint on the trim rubs off eventually. So does the rubberised coating on the e46s.

So in my opinion they both have their positives and negatives.

I prefer the multilink suspension of the e90. But I do enjoy cruising in my e46. I like both cars.

Things like water pumps etc. The e90 has more electrical components and they do give up more frequently than their mechanical counter parts. Such is the nature of electrical components. But this other other benefits such as less parasitic drag on the engine.

They are both great cars. Let's not get into a mine is better argument.

OP should buy whichever car he can afford. If you can afford and e90 and the maintenance then go for an e90 320d. But with a 100k budget youre not looking at a great example.

I would suggest a MANUAL e46 330d 150kw and have some cash left over to do the required maintenance and maybe a tune if he wants more power.

Yuben have you owned an E90 to make a bold statement as such?

You cannot generalise all E90's based on 2 examples.

There are plenty that have done heavy mileage without blowing up.

OP, for R100k, E46 is the way to go

No I haven't, but from many of my friends and family that have them, i would rather stick to my E46:cartel:

Agreed that the E46 is not superior to the E90 on all departments and vice versa. E46 has cooling system issues for example.

But for R100k and E46 for around R70-75k would be ideal in my opinion with that balance to be used on maintenance. After all the E46 is much older and will require some maintenance.

If you read my post, you'll notice I did agree on the E46 for a budget of R100K

Anything lower then a 330i or d then an auto might be a problem, but speaking for the 330 club here.

Bring that i10 and I will show you how I get a gap in the traffic, don't underestimate the auto's. With the correct combination that auto and engine is dangerous

How do you launch with that gearbox? Nope I don't brake boost with it. I know they are weak so I'm nursing it until I do a manual conversion.

Foot on brake
revs at 1500
dsc off
Launch out of line simple

At 1500 turbo is spooled up and ready. Minimum spin off the line with car shifting in manual mode
