What is this part? Selector link boot?

Hi
E36 323i, manual transmission.
I've replaced the gearbox output shaft seal but noticed the boot around the gearshift link on the chassis is broken. Please see the picture below:

What is this part called? I looked on RealOEM but couldn't find it. Is it necessary to replace it? At the moment I still have clear access to it but am going to refit the drive shaft and exhaust early next week and don't feel like removing them again just to replace the boot.

Could it be no. 8 in this diagram, taken from http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?model=CB78&mospid=47497&btnr=25_0013&hg=25&fg=05?

Yip, it's number eight in your diagram, it's the dust cover / centre rubber for the 'gear lever' that just fits with a lip onto the actual body of the car....but first you slide it over the gear lever.....will not make any obvious difference to the car, maybe some higher noise from below and some dust if you travel on dirt....

Agreed. It just depends on how long it would take to source the part. Had to wait 3.5 weeks for the gearbox output shaft seal and when I called BMW the 3rd time they had it at the dealership for I don't know how long. That after they did not return my call twice to update me. Hopefully Goldwagen has one.

So is this installed from inside the car over the gear lever?

You can install it from inside, but if you have the gear lever out already, it's easier....I just spray a little Q20 on the new rubber boot, then it slides easier over the gear lever, especially from the inside of the car!
