What is this for?

On my e90 320d last night I was replacing rear brake pads and while doing this I thought to do a quick inspection underneath the car.

I came across this bracket, situated under the drivers side close to the exhaust. I'm not sure what it is or what it is used for?
Any ideas?

Hi Picard, it's a bracket that holds the cover for the gearbox, I see the bottom of the bracket is not connected to the cover though

Ah...I figured as much. I wonder where it disappeared to? Probably was never put back when BMW replaced the clutch, cause I would think I'd hear that fall off.
