What is the correct temp gauge reading?

Where should the temperature gauge on my 528i be when driving on the highway?

My car's gauge will be just above the blue and in the top of the blue, whilst driving on the highway.

While in the traffic it will go to about halfway between blue and the next white marking at most.

Is this normal?

The needles are buffered to be at 12 when in normal operating temperature. Makes it easier for your eyes to notice if things are going wrong, rather then normal being abit to the left or abit to the right. In the blue is no good, and engine that is not hot enough will not be very fuel efficient.

She's always running rich (bad mpg) and on top of that it'll wash away the layer of oil on the cylinder walls (more wear and tear)...either way you don't want to run the car like this for and extended period...

Time to inspect and maybe overhaul that cooling system if you haven't already...

It is time for a cooling system overhaul. If you are going to replace the thermostat, you might as well do the waterpump, just for piece of mind and because you are going to do most of the labour anyway...

Replaced thermostat and then replaced waterpump about 2 monts after that.
This is now about 3 months ago. No problems ever since and the temp is at 12h00 when operating.

Thanks for every-one's input and advice.

thanks for the report back, I see the original thread was in 2011 sometime, glad the needle now sits at 12 o-clock, like it should
