Nice upgrade from the 318i engine and I'm sure it goes like stink, but I just can't get over the sound. I'm sorry, but there just isn't like a BMW straight six and I think even BMW's 4 cylinders sound better. I think my aircon pump's worn bearing makes a better sound. Probably just me though :dunno:

personally, as a track car i would go for the smaller M44 318is engine with a few mods over one of the stock I6 engines (325/328) except for the M3 engine of course. It will keep it light and lithe for the track and i dont think it would be any slower around a track. and if at a later stage you DO want to boost it, some decent power can be made...

if you were to go for broke though... one of the E34 M5 engines would turn an e30 into an absolute torque MONSTER...

I wouldnt mind installing either of those engines for you either... would be a good project. Although truth be told there are alot of non-BMW engines that would do very well....

Some food for thought! However, I dont see how a puny 1800 engine will stack up to the 2.8. I dotn wana be left wishing for more power!!

M5 engine would be amazing! But i think those engine might be a little to far out my price range! I woudlnt know where to find one anyway!

an M44 (1900cc IIRC) with a different intake setup, maybe throttles (sidedraughts would be fine on a track), a 285-ish set of cams, a little off the head to slightly raise compression and a decent exhaust would push out about 130kw (flywheel) which is right up there with the (stock) sixes... This is general though and you would have to get the specs of the cams, find out how much you can realistically raise the compression, and check out a few things... but still very doable.

you wont get the torque of the sixes but it wont be a huge disadvantage on a track as you would be able to keep the motor in its (probably narrow) powerband. and realistically you would be removing about 40kg from the front axels... it would be a close run thing, M44 modded vs. stock 325/328... but i know i would have more fun in a four pot zinger...

i managed to get hold of one quite easily.. but that was a while ago now.. maybe someone else can help here... also depends on budget - throttles, cams, management and exhaust can easily cost 10k...

more and more i feel like you cant have anything close to what you want without spending 3 times what you think it should cost.... lol

Personally I would also go for the 328i engine.



Guys just remember that there is a catch with L12 engine as you need a flux capacitor so that pistons 7 trough 12 can move backwards in time else it will never work properly, and use a hell of a lot of oil.

325 e30 motor can't compete with 325 e36 or 328 e36 at higher revs , 24 valves rule !! M3 too expensive to maintain and fix . V8 conversions done in Germany , but too heavy in front , understeers .

Well if i where you i'll go for the 1j or2j fits nice and look's nice and a lots of power, did a bunce of them.

How much would you spend working this 4-cylinder to get the same power as a stock 325/328i engine? And how much would you spend on the stock 6-cylinder engine?

Look for an aluminium-block E36 328i engine. It weighs essentially the same as the M20 does stock (according to this), with more power and less things to worry about. :thumb: Just don't plan on boosting it.
