dude, lol, In my opinion, the E39 540i, nevermind 540i, the entire E39 range. are the best cars in the world, its won so many awards for that fact... power, smoothness, and its so much bluddy fun to drive.. you can drive it like a granny with classical music on, or you can drive it like schumi with some heavy metal.. it just adapts.. and their quite hard to break.. I've had mine for 3 years now, and I'll never sell it.. ever.. and if u drive it nice, the fuel consumption is quite good also.

hope u go for it...
clutchy.

Car looks very clean, wicked wheels...

Whats the maintenance costs on the 5ers compared to 3 series, on basic servicing and brakes etc???

You mean steering clear of stealerships...??? Are parts available through the regular spare shops?

P.S Apologies for semi - hijack, not too clued up on this sort a stuff.

Shot man, guess we can only benefit from our experienced members...

I'm also considering something along these lines, different to the 3 series. Was just curious about maintenance costs?

The maintenance wont be too much more, if you go to the dealers, it will be expensive no matter which car you have.

Parts are not that much more expensive, and a lot of the parts are backwards compatible as well.

But knowing where to shop is the secret to maintaining these cars, as with any car.

Example again, sent in a Nissan Hardbody to the dealers cause of a shudder, quote back, injectors and HP pump 16k, drop it off at my local machie, recon injectors plus new nozzles, R1,900

Yeah, dealers always quote exhorbitent prices, for simple things. BMW's arent that expensive to maintain on the whole, it just depends who and where you get things done.

And most importantly, how much are you prepared to read....

Example again : Gearbox oil leak, guy says he has to take out the whole box and its going to cost you your left ball.

Now a simple web search will tell you that gearbox seals can be replaced without dropping out the box, all except for the input shaft seal, so you get to ask intelligent questions, and that's like only 10 hairs as apposed to the whole nut.. :)

Yeah, and hairs grow back. They try and rape you on what you dont know. But once they realise that you know, they stop trying as hard.

Go check out the E65 7 series, one drive and you will see why I love mine so much, that is if you can get over how awesome that interior is.

I still find the E65 the most luxury interior out of any car in its price range, and that includes the S Classes, it is just simply outstanding.
