Yep, it is a pity that we don't have a local online shopping site like this! G-Drive is pretty good and constantly updating their catalogue as things become available or sold out. But yes, not always OEM stuff. Not sure about the Meyle disks and pads, probably not too bad, but not sure how they compare to the OEM parts.

See now that it is OEM parts that ECS motorsport sells - very nice stuff!

The smaller branches aren't always too clued up it seems, I was directed to the Goodwood main branch since they are also the warehouse and generally have stock of everything...

I had to wait for those discs. Auto Bavaria had them come all the way from Germania. :) Took 4 weeks!

What did those discs set you back?

Let's just say they're expensive...:fencelook:

When doing the brakes, just remember to use anti-squeal grease (copper grease) on the backs of the pads where they make contact with the callipers and pistons.

Thanks will do so:thumbs: Gonna do some more shopping around this weekend:rollsmile: So far the ATE's are at the top of my list. Do I need to get brake sensors all round or just 1 for the front and 1 for the back?

Copper grease: Midas sells this in a small (decent size) tube for around R30 or so, but I bought a 500ml tub of Hershel copper grease from Builder's Warehouse for around R90, but will probably last forever since you only use a very small amount of this stuff.

Two sensor in total, one for the front left, and one for the right rear.

Cool thanks:thumbs: When do the brake sensors actually trigger the warning light though? My front pads are almost finished, but the brake warning light hasn't gone off yet.

I think it is when there is around 3 - 2.5 mm of pad left (minimum thinness for pads is spec'ed at 3mm)

Edit: Normally a good idea to save yourself a R100 or so and replace the pads before the warning light comes on.

Yep, can often reuse the wear sensors when replacing pads if they have not been triggered yet - they literally only "trigger" when the disks get thin enough for the sensors to wear through which is how they function.

Hi guys.I usually replace pads myself on ALL my cars(E500,156 V6,E91 320D,280DT).ATE products are definately above average and only really extreme drivers will feel otherwise,no matter how we rate our ability individually, few of us are in this catergory.I also have to say that febi is under BILSTEIN!Enugh said....we all SHOULD know who BILSTEIN is.
Under motorplan and on delivery, most BMWs are fitted with a brand called TEXTAR(??).....YUP!!! ....I had also never had of them.Interestingly at the front they use a brand called JURID.....which is the same brand you get from Mercedes Benz agents as i do for my W211 E500.....and i have found them to be excellent. They have to be in order to haul a 2 ton V8 repeatedly from above 140 with no fade at all...as happens on my regular N3 runs from DBN to Ladysmith thanks to our great truckdrivers. They do wear rapidly though and produce ALOT of breakdust.

Yep, softer grippier pads unfortunately are going to give off a lot more brake dust and wear out quicker, one of those things. Plus they run at slightly lower temperatures compared to the harder material brake pads, so less chance of warping disks etc.

Thanks for all the advise guys, really appreciate it:thumbs: It seems Midas is out of stock of the ATE disks and pads, but they're trying to source a set for me:flyfun:

Burgy from project shift also recommended Powerbrake GT series disks and pads so also waiting on a quote on those from Powerbrake.

Another spares shop said they could source Metelli disks and pads for me.

Let them get these ATE disks and pads for you - I know they don't always have them in stock, but can get...

Jurid pads are from the Bendix stable. They are excellent, but I don't think they make more dust than the ATE pads. It's more or less the same.

I have never seen TEXTAR pads from BMW. They always supply ATE for my e46 in any case. And Jurid for the 135i.

+1

Spoke to a Foreman whose been working over 20 years for Bmw, he mentioned Bmw used ATE on the e30's but stopped when the e36 came into production. Last year when I bought front discs & pads for my e36 from the stealers, there was no stamps or badges on the discs & pads, not even on the box.

I think you partly incorrect here, I think what he meant is that ATE were not involved with the E36 model. I can assure that both my E46's have ATE stamps over all the brake parts so I can assure that you that ATE were OEM for the E46 range.

Also don't be mislead by the Febi - Bilstein name. I'm sure that the Bilstein suspension is one of the best in the business, however that doesn't necessary mean that thier brakes are in the same league. I'd take the actual experiences of firum members before simply buying by brand name or supposed reputation these days.

Case in point, 10 years back CAT shoes were the bomb, I refused to wear anything but CATS - nowadays they are just crap, can't last a year !

I fitted ATE to my E46 awhile back, however I've been experiencing a squeaking noise since they were fitted.
Brakes shudder as well, think it mustve been a bad batch ...

Part numbers of course do change, so sometimes RealOEM part numbers don't correlate with what various suppliers and even the agents have on their systems, plus some parts get revised as time goes on. Best is to familiarise yourself with the existing disks so that you can verify that they are correct when getting them from these guys.

Hope they supply the correct disks this time around!

Don't forget to clean them with a good solvent before fitting!

I actually checked the part numbers against the ATE website. When I got the quote they didn't supply me with part numbers on the quotation so I couldn't verify them then although Midas assured me that they quoted me on parts for a 330i. I only checked the numbers when I got home. Germantechnik is gonna fit them for me so ill ask him to double check if they correct tomorrow morning before returning them:thumbs:

When I bought discs and pads 2 odd weeks ago I was also supplied the wrong discs, brought them home and took of the tyre and its was obvious... When I called the shop they verified that they supplied me the pre 2003model discs and that the post 2003 ones were different, I didn't argue and took my correct ones home with me...

Ps. When fitting, don't forget the copper slip and the grease in the sliding pins/bolts that have Allen key heads,

I wouldn't do this, it is a metal on rubber interface so it is not very likely to be noisy, also copper grease could get absorbed into the rubber causing it to deteriorate.

According to the BMW TIS these are the surfaces that you should apply the copper slip to:
