What a nightmare

Is it possible for a oil leak at the oil cooler to affect the alternator by leaking oil into it? This is the bullshit story im being told by the monkeys that are working on my car!

Depends what E90 you have. If I recall correctly on the 320i the oil cooler is not far above the alternator so if it has an external leak on the cooler it will run down and possibly damage the alternator if it has been soaked for some period

Yup It can , especially if its caked in oil , mixed with road dirt , sand , dust etc . Maybe try and clean it up properly and check the brushes? Brushes could also be worn out and are cheap to replace.

Whats it doing?

Car went in to the guys perfectly fine for oil leak, which was oil cooler gasket, tappet cover gasket, front brakes and oil service, nothing wrong and no error codes when it went in. now its throwing up 931d error code and my speedometer isnt working at all

Just a quick question, hope someone can help, would that error code pop up along with speedo, Rev counter and petrol guage not working if the battery was disconected for a long period of time?

Speedo not working is related to a D.SC. Issue. Either the unit itself or speed sensors.

Rev counter and fuel gauge also not working would point to a problem on the PT can bus. Seems like someone messed where they shouldn't hey.

wow

so a minor oil leak repair turns in a major issues elsewhere
on the Alternator issue, my first (cheapest) personal attempt, would be to get a can of Electric Switch Cleaner spray, and give the alternator a good cleaning out, to see if that hasn't cured the problem
but
now the problem seems to be far deeper than this

good luck

Just got my car back, all is in perfect working order now, sho im glad! Seems to have been a problem with sensors which they sorted out at their own cost, looks like they used a high pressure cleaner on my engine and that might have caused the problem. Thank the Pope that they managed to sort it out

Excellent news bud.

So just a word of advice for you and others: do yourself a favor and check the drain holes and leaf catchers in the engine bay. These tend to get blocked and cause havoc with the wiring loom that goes between the ebox and the passenger side firewall as the engine bay is cleaned with a pressure washer. It can get so bad that the ebox gets flooded and the result is an ecu replacement - I know as I get 3 of these a week now after the rains.

As you can imagine this is a very, very costly repair and something that can be avoided with minimal effort.

Yup, sounds like you got water where it aint supposed to go. Either that, or the guys pinched a cable somewhere.

Open the bonnet, remove the microfilters and cowel. When removed, youll find the clips to open the ebox. Check nicely in that area for moisture.

Also, check the loom that goes over the engine to the drivers side where the DSC sits. It really sounds like the data bus has a problem on it.

If all else fails, you welcome to get the car to me to have a look

Yeah bud, it takes a while for water to seep through to where it shouldnt. Im not saying for sure it is, but the symptoms are there.

I can guarantee you though that the issue is related to the drive train bus being damaged and could be a right pain in the punani to find

Could a coil that gave in be the cause of this problem?

So my car is once again sorted, they said it was an ignition coil. Im letting them drop the car off with my dad so he can use it for a week to make sure the problem is sorted before I go to fetch my car
