well. this is annoying...

My car struggled to start this morning, and then the yellow engine light of annoyance came on.

TC off, oil sensor, tire pressure sensor, crankshaft sensor, fuel and air pressure sensor, and a pretty heavy missfire when cold. And of course quite a loss of power. The car also gets warm a lot faster, but seems to settle at around 100C.
Could it have switched the temp gauge to display the coolant temp instead of the oil temp?

Hill start assist not working, together with the loss of power is quite something to get used to as well.

Now I'm really glad I extended that MP.

I can only get it looked at on Monday, so I will be driving a very slow BMW this weekend. :(

Yesterday when I heard I they only had a spot open on Monday, I told them about some of the issues like the oil sensor not working and the missfire. Their words were that if I get the red light, I can call BMW on call and get it towed.

Anyway yesterday went to gym, home, work, home, all in limp mode.

Today the car started easily, no missfires, not warning light (except for the low fuel one :D). The car drives just like it did on Wednesday, the day before that, and the week before that.

The manual says that when yellow, you can still drive but get it looked at. Limp mode is there to prevent you from doing damage when driving, and judging by just how limp it went when some sensors stopped working, it looks like they are erring on the safe side.
When red, you stop and get towed.

The only trip this weekend is 20km away.

Sorry, but what bmw is this? Could be alternator or battery messing around?

It's a 2008 135i. The battery cable was replaced in the recall in April, and she had a major service in May.

Battery seems likely. Serious problems don't just go away like this.

Hi had similar issues with my e90 and it was just the battery. The battery maximum level dropped on mine which created the issues. Started off with engine running hotter and a transmission warning light. Replaced battery and all fine.

Besides battery it could be a faulty footwell module. It's the only this that connects to everything you mentioned including the hill assists and tire pressure sensors.
third option could be bad ECU connectors, recheck the plugs are all sitting snug on JB harness.
Fourth would be a bad water pump which in turn has shorted the footwell module.
Hope you get sorted quickly and it's a simple fix.

Have they replaced the Vanos solinoid? Mine had similar symptoms, they said the vanos was coated in oil and sludge, the joys of these motors. They replaced the vanos and no more issues. Mine only had 45k on the clock when it happened!

Thanks for all the info.
The vanos solenoid has not been replaced according to the service history, unless it has been done at the last service without them telling me.

I will do a bit of youtube searching and see how easy it is to check the stuff George mentioned, but will probably just let BMW sort it out on Monday.

Would any of those items mentioned cause catestrophic failure if I drive the car another 50km?

Car went to BMW on Monday morning and I got her back on Tuesday. The problem was a loose connection at the distributor box behind the cubbyhole. I think George called it.
Thanks for all the advice.

All that was needed was to crimp the wires again and plug back in. Nothing was even replaced.

Its funny how you can miss your car in a such a short period of time.

BMW Cedar Isle has great muffins! The breakfast of champions!
