Ok sorry then, I took offence to being called dishonest & retaliated by attacking you. I was actually being honest & have the proof from years ago when I showed the diff gained 8 metres on my E46 M3. Which is between 0.1 to 0.2 seconds. Thinks have changes a lot since those days & I believe Ary's car lost ground with the diff on the standing starts. That is my opinion & I am not being dishonest.

It's possible I said the diff may gain up to 0.3 to 0.4 back in the day, but I was young & naive then. The thrust & acceleration from the driver's seat is so much more pleasurable that it "feels" a whole lot faster than it is. Standing starts even things like gearing out. Each car starts out from zero in 1st gear. The torque muplication of the diff tends to even out as 1st gear both cars multiply loads of torque to the ground & traction is the limiting factor. But I still feel a diff can gain up to a tenth on the standing but it depends entirely on the car. Each car is different.

Here's some comments on my thread about the 4.1 & some of these guys had the diff:

"I am very surprised to see only a marginal improvement in 1/4 mile times

i dont want to be a bubble-burster, but this data demonstrates to me that it's definitely not worth it to get a 4.1 diff.

Great post! Now I certainly won't be getting a 4.10 diff. What you gain between 1st and 2nd gear seems minimal.

Can someone just confirm if Im getting this right, basically the real gains are minimal in performance, but it feels like a lot more, so it s worth it..

Cause the graphs ^^ make the difference look puny, but youre saying I put em in, the butt dyno will make me pleased, if so thats enough Ill buy the dang things..

so for the minimal gains from what i'm understand a lot of people do it for the "peppy feel"

I thought the difference would be wider compared to stock gearing.

As the data shows, at least to me and with my experience, a strait line yields very little improvement. If they were in fact superior, BMW would have put these in from the factory.

Bottom line, it makes the car more fun and flexible in traffic,"

4.1 didn't help me much at Tarlton, then again I still have a mediocum of mechanical sympathy.

I ran the same times at higher exit speeds (late 13s, mid 160s) with the diff.

PS 50/50 what happened ekse, thought you were Sherwin's bra?

Alwys will b Blade, just farking around:)

Smoothie was ur take on the "poor man’s supercharger” theory?

Boned CSL reps makes the wheels turn faster n not the diff:)

I think in a perfect utopia where the car has 100% traction in all the gears the shorter final drive will have a advantage off the line for the first gear as it will improve the 60ft quite a bit and that's what gives you the biggest gain on the quarter mile.
On a Friday night the shorter final drive needs a excellent driver to take advantage. The only way you will really know is to work out your average G's in each gear. The gears will be shorter you will be moving to your next gear sooner which always has a drop in G's. What the averages are is what counts. I do think that a E46 M3 that is being reved to 8500rpm will gain some from the final drive but not more than .2seconds at most. It also depends if the car can still pull through in third. If extra gear change is required into fourth on the run you will loose what you had gained slightly.

From the discussion I had with Ary, the diff is making a difference on his ¼ times

I disagree as the feeling is deceptive. But hey, that's my opinion. Maybe I'm wrong. I'm not being dishonest or lying, it's my opinion.

Whats happening, Chill....Relax

here's my take:
With Stock diff, I ran 13.7 @ 166kmh
Some runs I don't have to change into 4th gear @ all and some just before the line
Drag Wars, I ran in 30 Degrees heat
13.8
13.8
14.1
13.8
13.7 @166
My constant was 13.8, but track was prepped

With 4.10 on a Friday night, colder air
I ran
13.7
13.6
13.8
13.6
13.6
I changed to 4th gear about 10 metres before the finish line with 4.10 whereas wih stock diff, I hardly had to change
My constant now is 13.6

I've tried different launching techniques etc, 4.10 does make a slight difference on the 1/4 mile
Maybe 0.1 or 0.2 @ MOST, from what I can gather

On rolling, the 4.10 is where I feel the most gained.
Myself & Sherwie had some runs rolling, and 4.10 is HUGE difference
From the line, on the road, I actually lost a tad from standing start as we've tested plenty of times.

Stock Diff, I edge a little from standing start
With 4.10 I'm a little behind but that could be due to lotsa other factors.

4.10 does help. but def more on the rolling runs!

Forget the politics ouks, just help me beat the 13.5 record @ Tarlton for the E46 ///M3

I don't know best, that's my opinion. You do know that Soulblade fitted the 4.1, went to Tarlton & went slower. Only when the limiter raised did he match the times. The diff in isolation made him slower. The same diff that's now on Arys car.

George, on a manual car the 60ft goes slower with the diff.

The shorter diff on a stock car might make it slower on a quarter mile with no other supporting mods. The geared speeds will decrease and you not high enough in the power band to start accelerating in 4th gear.

Well done Ary, 167 is still a great trap. If you can get your 60ft down to 1.8 with some good tyres, you will run 13.4 or maybe even 13.3 & your trap will also go up. I think the diff actually hurt your trap from standstill.
