Good day all

I firstly would like to thank all of the members for the advices and support received. The members have really been amazingly supportive and I greatly appreciate it. This group is a blessing indeed. I believe in absolute transparency and honesty and especially in a situation like this, integrity is key. Therefore, herewith the latest correspondence between myself and the seller regarding this.

He has indicated that he would do the ECT on Saturday the latest and I would then just save up and buy a complete motor. As mentioned, the history of the is well documented and the evidence of the history is visible in the components of the vehicle.

Once again thank you so much for the advices shared and support given.

R20k will cover very little on an N54 but I'm glad you've come to an agreement that you are both satisfied with.

Glad that the seller has stepped up!

Thanks for the input and opinions. I appreciate the feedback, I honestly don't have a comment at this time. I will definitely keep this thread updated going forward.

it could of run a bearing because of a snapped belt though

It's not the belt. It ran bearings coz it previously had bearing knock and crank was cut before

yes im saying that bearing knock could of been because of the belt snapping but i sent that message at the same time as your message about your convos with seller.

this could seem like a strange question, however please explain this further for me?

I have read that When the belts snap they get pulled in through the crank seal area and the pieces of belt block up the oil pickup resulting in little or no oil flow.

Howsit... yes, thank you for asking. Im busy doing a full rebuild. Its taking time because it is expensive, however it's a great learning curve because you really get to see what these motors are all about. I still basically on the buying stage. Block and head is at the engineers to be done. Crank came about 3 weeks ago. Im in the process of buying a new oil pump, bearings, sump kit etc. I've bought all the seals, rings etc. Most of the expenses went into the engineering side of things. Will send a comprehensive update on everything done and still to be done shortly.

Thanks for the update. An old forumite is in the process of buying a 2008 pre lci 335i  for not much. Problem is it is smoking a lot so much so that he is shy to drive it because of the smoke. The car has quite a history in that this is the second motor and this motor has alse been "overhauled". It pulls like a train according to him but it is drinking oil and with the problem that it does not have a dipstick he is not sure of the oil level as he never drives it far enough to get  the oil temp up to measure the level. I advised him not to buy the car but he really wants it. The car otherwise is in very good condition.

I would be careful. These motors are very finicky and it's best he makes sure of what he is getting otherwise he should be prepared to spend big bucks to get it right. Based on what he's getting it for he can weigh his options. Its could be something like valve stems or even rings, turbos or pcv valve. What colour is the smoke. I second your advices though.

Hey bud, it's been a while, how's your car /build coming along, give us some updates? What happened with the previous owner and the engine etc?

Howsit bud, its been a while indeed, build is coming along slowly, the lockdown/covid pandemic has made everything a lot more challenging in that whatever plans I initially had, had to be put on hold.  There were a few priorities preceding the build.  The last I did mention about the previous owner was that he said that there is no way he can accept any responsibility what had happened because he had been using the car for about a year without it having any problems.  I explained to him that the oil analysis that had been conducted by a very reputable company revealed that the wrong oil,(10W40),had been used, (the proper oil should have been 5W30). He believed that this information is not the be all and end all of evide and was therefore not prepared to accept it. After some discussion and and me mentioning that I had in fact also got access to information that the motor had previously had work done to the crank and that  the motor had already been rebuilt by him, he said he was only prepared to give me 20k to assist with repairing.  I initially wanted to.return the car but unfortunately the consumer protection period had lapsed by now and I unfortunately had to accept... the legal fees and frustrations of the fight would not have been worth it so my decision to rebuild was the better choice for me. The crank, bearings, No.1 piston and conrod, and No.1 cylinder wall were damaged. Currently the block and head are with the engineers.  I got new rings, all the seals, new piston and rod, crank, valve stem seals so far. Need to get the bearings, head gasplugs, new vacuum lines oil pump and timing chain, all bolts, etc. Assembly has not started yet but thankfully nothing else is damaged. I will also do water.pump and thermostat while I'm at it. Thank you to Jeremy Jeffrey's for the amazing support and efforts in assisting me. He's a great help and I'm eternally grateful for his guidance. I will update as i progress and I'm sure with the guidance of the ones with more knowledge and experience, this will be an epic build.

FINALLY COMPLETED MY REBUILD. CAR GOES LIKE A DREAM. WE HAVE LEARNT A LOT ON THIS JOURNEY AS WELL AS LEARNING HOW PEOPLE CAN TAKE SHORT CUTS WITH THESE MOTORS,ie. Previous build on the motor. I HOWEVER TOOK ALMOST 2 YEARS ON THIS BUILD BUT THE TIME AND MONEY SPENT IS ABSOLUTELY WORTH IT. CAR GOES BETTER THAN IT EVER WENT. STILL RUNNING IT IN AND I CAN ALREADY FEEL THE DIFFERENCE IN:

1) Engine smoothness
2) Car's power delivery is beautiful, linear, and loads of torque. The engine is really quiet.
I'm still in the process of running it in so fuel consumption, power outputs etc. Is not of much relevance at this stage.

I want to thank everyone who assisted/guided me along the way with an extra special thanks to:
Jeremy Jeffereys
Tauriq Saval
Aaron Matthews
Rishi
Deago
and last but not least my awesome Mechanic Tyrell Taylor for his workmanship. Will do a seperate thread discussing what challenges we were faced with during the build, including costs, where to source parts and what parts I would recommend should anyone decide to do a rebuild on the N54's.

I can finally appreciate my then lemon, as im pleased to say, the lemon has been turned to lemonade.
