Vibration at 110km/h and up

Hi All

I see my original post no longer exists. Need some help.
When i drive at 110km and up i get a bad vibration more on the left side of the car.

I have checked the following:

-Propshaft and center bearing is fine. this was checked at Propshaft Exchange in Pretoria.
-Had the Rims checked and they not buckled or warped.
- Wheel Bearings are fine.
- i replaced all 4 tyres in Feb this year with Continentals RFT's

I have been reading online that there were cases where these tyres were causing similar issues with some BMW.

Apart from the tyres what else can i have checked.
Car is out of Plan so don't want to use the dealerships.

Any advise or guidance will be appreciated :)

Regards,
Vinny

Hi, you don't mention if you had the wheels balanced, but it could be due for balancing and alignment depending on the milage done so far.

Good luck!

Did you rule out Flex disc?

I've been told that tyres can "warp" too. I'm not sure if I believe it (maybe one of the more experienced members can confirm this).

Apologies I forgot to mention

Alignment and high speed balancing was done. Will check out flex disk.

Going to twt tomorrow. Conti rep is coming out to inspect

Get a second opinion on condition of rims
Incorrect tyre pressures can produce vibrations.
Vibrations that rise with speed are usually to do with balancing -but you say this was done. Maybe have it done somewhere else. If the balancing machine is not calibrated it will not balance the wheel. I've experienced this before.

You don't say whether the vibration is on the steering wheel or the body of the car
A steering vibration is usually caused by front wheel/suspension issues. Alignment esp rear -will cause vibration on the floor of the car

Worn bushes esp in the front, control arms, track rods/tie rod ends will cause vibrations if badly worn

Worn front shocks particularly and their mountings will do too

I had warped front discs causing vibrations on an E46. You'd think only on braking, but they did also on driving at higher speeds. I've known of this on other BMW models too where the vibration was cured by changing all 4 rotors

Worn diff bush -rear and or mounting bush can do this too..mine cracked but never caused vibration, but it can do in some cars

If your wheels have spacers- this could be the culprit...not seating or warped or rusted, dirty etc or your suspension just doesn't like spacers. Had this problem before

You say the CSB is new, but the flexible disc /GUIBO is a common cause of vibrations usually on floor of car- at speed

Badly worn engine mountings will cause more engine vibrations that transmit to your wheels esp if other suspension components are worn

A very irritating problem this- Hope you find the cause and not pay too much:thumbs:

My money would be on the tyres.

We have had numerous incidents like this over a couple of sets of Conti tyres. As has @tman after which the rep paid for a new set of tyres from a different brand for him if I remember correctly.

Hopefully you get the tyres checked out properly and sorted

ok so the issue has been fixed :smilebounce::smilebounce:

Turns out it was the conti tyres.

He checked them and his report stated all 4 were "hopping"
Considering the tyres had less than 60% life the rep gave me an 80% Credit note to another set of tyres.

So i chose Michelin tyres and the car runs smooth. :)

Hopping, meaning flat spots?

Glad it is sorted out!

How do they check this type of defect?
I have 19" Conti Runflats, I could be having the same issue, I've checked my rims they're straight, did alignment and balancing, but my car vibrates between 100 - 130kmh, I can also feel it on the steering.

When did you fit these tyres?

I was fortunate as i had the contisure on these tyres. I bought them when TWT were running a special, buy 18" or larger and get the contisure

The Conti rep made them take the wheels of the car and put them on the wheel balancing machine and he could see the tyres "hopping"

So he gave me a credit note and i paid the difference for the new tyres.

I had the exact same symptoms as you. Car vibrates between 100 - 140km\h and i could also feel it in the steering wheel. the front passenger seat also used to shake quite badly

Best you take it back from where you fitted these tyres and ask them to have the conti rep take a look at them.

Nope not flat spots. that was the first question i asked the Rep when i read the report. He confirmed no flat spots.

When the rim&tyre is placed on the balancing machine you can usually see the rim going round & round in a perfectly straight line (meaning there is no sideways or up an down movement). I have seen guys at Supaquick etc put a pencil close to the edge of the rim once it starts to spin. This makes it easy to see see if your rim is bent or straight (its not a fool proof method, but can give you somewhat on an indication).

If your tyre is "hopping" you will see movement of the tyre on the rim, going left & right, up & down as the rim goes round.

What causes the tyre to start hopping?

I fitted them from TWT in Pretoria Central last year, I'll have to check my invoices for the actual date.

It can be a range of factors. Incorrect fitment, damage due to not doing balancing and alignment at regular intervals, manufacturer defects etc
