Vanos and DISA Flap redone

Replaced the Vanos seals with Beisan seals and had the DISA Flap replaced...car goes like an f-ing rocket. Pulls from low rpm like a mule and becomes a Saturn rocket from just over 3000 rpm. Unbeleiveable.

Hi MikeR,

I expected the Vanos to make a difference...actually did not expect SUCH a difference. My car is a cabriolet and I just always thought it was normal (because of the added weight) that the car was a touch lazy off the mark. I am uncertain if the DISA flap added to the sudden increase in performance, I did read somewhere that the DISA flap will assist in improved performance, to what degree I do not know. I had them both done together. I had the Vanos done and then Bruce's called to say the DISA Flap was not functioning 100% and since this thing can send funny bits of plastic etc straight into the engine's guts, I did not hesitate. I had the old unit returned to me and it looks terrible. So in around about way, I am uncertain if the DISA assisted or not, but there is a massive difefrence in the performance. I service the car every 10K, so I don't fart around with anything that is faulty, I fix it.

I never DIY-ed it, I took it Bruce's and when they were doing the Vanos, they noticed that the DISA Flap was faulty.

The Vanos Seals were bought from Beisansystems.com for about R450 including postage. Took one month to arrive. Bruce's charged R1270 for the fitment, R100 for the steam clean of the unit. Very economical and the seals are very very good quality.

As for the DISA Flap, costs almost R2800 from BMW, fitment is easy and cost about R200 from Bruce's.

The Vanos seals made a major difference, power is through the roof. DISA Flap must have added to this. The car's respons is crisper, faster and it feels like new.

I am no technician, but what I do know is this taht it is part of the air intake system and if a piece of it breaks off it can be injgested into the engine and could result in catastrophic damage. Mine was faulty and the pin was actually protruding dangerously.

The DISA Flap's function is to be open at low speeds, so feeding all six intake pipes together.

At mid-range speeds it closes, seperating the front and rear groups of three cylinders from each other. At higher speeds it opens again, joining the cylinder groups together. It therefore acts like a massive balance pipe which can be closed when required.

The effect of this is to give more mid-range torque without interfering with bottom and top-end torque.

BTW guys, my fuel consumption has dropped dramatically. Used to get 14.5-16l p/100Km, it's down to 11.5-12.2 urban cycle. Expected a saving with a new DISA Flap, but never expected such a surprise. Very happy with the work done.

I had the disa done on my car ar it was noisy and did not want to take the chance of bits of it going into the engine but it did not give such results as you have. So I am guessing the vanos seals was what gave the most gains

Agreed on the power increase coming from Vanos, but I think the DISA Flap is the part that set the fuel consumption right. I have a 330, so I am not talking trash when I say the power is totally different. The major impact is in the lower rpms.

Thought you had the N46??

You can drive my M43 Manual (87Kw) or one of our N46B20 Auto's (E46 (105Kw) & E90(110 KW))

105Kw @ 200Nm.

They ran that motor for only 2 to 3 years, and then had the N46... Seemed to be a bit of an iffy motor

I think this was the first motor that they combined both Vanos and Valvetronic.

So N46 & N42 similar power...

Did not know the 4cyl's had Vanos Like the big boys
