So i had a long day of driving medium to hard, and now tonight I hear this knocking noise. Tempo increases with engine speed. Sounds like cardboard between the spokes of a bicycle!
car hasnt lost any power and engine check says okay.

Any advice? How can i check if i am supposed to heva the swirl flap issue?

i did some reading but still dont know if i have swirl flaps. think i do...
2005/08 build
M47/T2 or realoem says M47/N2 engine in my car.

another website says...
M 47 engine ( 136 bhp non common rail vp 44 injection pump ) DO NOT
HAVE swirl flaps
M 47 N common rail engine ( including M 47 N / M 47 TU /M 47 TUD 20 ) ( 150 bhp
face lift model August- September 2001 onwards ) has flaps

i am trying to see on the intake manifold page if i have flaps but cant see on the phone... can somebody help check on realoem.com?
my last 7nrs of vin is NK56247

Maybe something came lose in the engine bay or even underneath. Do you only hear the noice when the car drives? What about parked and reving it up? If so, perhaps someone can rev the car while you listen underhood. First eliminate the obvious things. Also check the "cover" immediately under the bonnet...loose perhaps?

Additionally to Twinz' advice please take a long screwdriver or metal rod and hold the one side on the engine and the other to your ear and listen whilst the engine is running!
Move position at the engine
There you can hear if the knowck comes from the engine inside

It does increase with engine speed. Sounds like something hard rattling, but in the engine. I have taken of some covers but can only say its to the left top side of engine.
I did find a loose rubber between the pulleys, so briefly had high hopes, now i cant find where its suppose to go. I have yanked on almost anything but no change in the knock or rattle. It has not gotten worst, i guess thats a good thing regarding anything catastrophic?

Rubber in the picture

I am struggling to get a pic posted...

I think its most likely the vibration damper ... this is a very common thing on the earlier e90 320d's ... I see in my MP history that mine was changed at 14k km ... so if yours hasn't been changed yet on an 2005 model then its most likely the cause, you should be able to get a used one for under R1k ..

If it is it will be good news. Any idea how to check it? Can i drive the car with it broken? As in 4k km trip holiday? Is a DIY on it possible and where can I buy one. My small town's mechanic will possibly be closed for the holidays already

Anyone know where that rubber goes?

I uploaded a vidio on youtube. 320d 2005 e90 engine knocking/vibration sound

I wouldnt do such a large amount of mileage in that condition, there is a chance something else may be effected, not worth the risk.

That means i will be stuck with the i20! Sucks.

I will see about booking the car at the stealers, maybe they not to expensive. It will require me sending the car via a stranger, 120km. Ai, my festive season is starting to look very bleak

Yes. If the pulley needs replacement (aswell) it may sort out the hesitation with engaging the clutch. My first gear was horrible, the car just wanted to die if you dont catch it early enough. Its not the clutch thats the issue but how a damage pulley affects the drive train and initial acceleration off the mark.

Has anyone had a chance to listen to my youtube vid and confirm what Twinz have said?

I think the fact that my clutch is also slipping kind of confirms what Twinz says

Mechanic checked vibration damper and said thats fine. His theory is the vacuum pump... so holding thumbs on that!

Not too sure, but lets put it this way, if it was that you swallowed a swirl flap, you will know about it...

SA warranties suck! They have a list of things they cover but it seems a vacuum pump is to modern!

Anyone know where I can pay less than 3.5k for a vacuum pump? My credit card is getting raped enough this month of super long January!
