Shu where do I start

1) Evo 2 will not have ali doors, fenders & bonnet, Evo 1 will
2) An iS does not have head rests
3) Above engine no there another no. which will start with 27K....
4) The head itself is the same as the 325i so should be stamped 2.5/2.7, if it only says 2.7, it most probably an eta head
5) The airflow was definitely changed, but not even to a 535i replacement which is more similar
6) check under the panel on drivers side to see if it still has the original ECU, should also have an Alpina sticker on it
7) all panels from the tech 2 kit should be plastic & you can find part numbers in rear wheel well for the side pods & at the bottom of the spoiler
8) OAF is Evo 1, OEJ is Evo 2
9) My OAF vin Evo 1 said 325/2S
10) The OAF/OEJ vin numbers not ltd to iS models, but starts at a certain number (it is somewhere on e30clubsa)

I am no expert but that what I can recall from my car & prev searches. Hope it helps

Yeah will cost a pretty penny.

If its an IS which looks like it is.......Just do it bud.

If its an IS you going to keep for a while even more reason.
At 80k its abit heavy if it needs lots of work but if you say it will cost around 70K to bring this car back to its Freshness, i would say its worth it:thumbs:

Not sure what AFM's are going for these days, I think I paid R1k for my 535i AFM about 3 years ago. But then I also hustled other goods along with it. The stock 325i AFM doesn't get as much air into the motor as the original or 535i AFM, so there is a power difference of course.

That car, at the right price would be an OK restoration project.
I would check everything absolutely thoroughly. Ask the seller if you can have a good 30min ALONE with the car, he can keep the keys, and you just go through EVERYTHING. body work, engine bay, engine, covers, interior, chassis, check numbers, check all the whole kit is plastic and has the M-Tech stickers, run checks etc etc etc, because yes, R70k is about a lower estimate on a proper restore of these cars. Parts from the stealers aren't cheap and they often the only people I would go through after experiencing the horrific quality of aftermarket e30 parts.

Also bear in mind that shadowlines now go for R70k if in neat condition.

Oh & an iS has E30 M3 suspension so should hav aluminium control arms as well, take a magnet with:thumbs:

Oh & headlining should be black

That front looks a bit skew, was in in a prang? Not a big issue provided it wasnt too bad with no poor repair work

Ant, I would probably harass people with R150k cash than enter a money pit with an over-inflated value that lacks originality to be honest with you.
That's my feeling on it.

But check the car out again chap. Thoroughly.

Decided against the car, I am only throwing my standards out the window because it's an IS. I want a car with books and history and looked after, and I will pay for the privilege

I will wait

Splint,

Wise choice, if there was uncertainty of the car being an iS, then that should have flagged it...the fact that parts arent original, thats another one.

Your 70k restore value would fall a bit short - I reckon it will cost 70k to restore a 318i e30, considering the nasty pricing at the dealers for oem parts - so needless to say, an iS would cost more.

I agree with not dropping your standards, if you willing to spend 150k either way, I would prefer to spend it on a near immaculate car.

Also, out of curiousity - what was the mileage...that will really determine how close the scale gets to 100k asking price. I saw a silver iS in boksburg, that car was a minter, with just under 100k on the clocks, they were asking 115k for it. Now that was just out of my price rnge, as at that specific time, I was earning student type money...still think I do, but yeah, I wont forget that fine and rare example.

Hope you find what you are looking for, we will keep ear to the ground if anything pops up worth your while.

The often overlooked and unexpected costs on a project are found in the body prep required for a rebuild.

A while back we did a nuts and bolts restoration on an e30 333i. In reality we expended around 400 hrs in prep, 40 hrs in paint and about 150hrs in finishing. Now even at a low rate of R250 an hour you are looking at a big number just in labour. The finished product is close to flawless, but there is a cost and it comes in the format of time.

If you are happy to live with a okay restoration, not a great one then you can cut the labour down by about 50-60%. If you just want a blow over and no body repair then you can bank on dropping those numbers by 90%... It really depends on your requirements and appetite. The universal truth is you get what you pay for.

Cheers
Nick

I would have offered him 50k and modded the 325is then, keep a lot stock but add your own favour to the car. You would have had a mint, hot personalized 325is.
