Upgrade to nav system

Hey guys

I found a partial nav system for sale at a scrap yard for R1700
It consists of the widescreen unit, bluetooth unit, DVD unit and uh some other unit which i failed to remember the name of :mmm:

My question is apart from those parts what else would i need in order to install it into my e46 sedan that currently has a tape deck business radio & CD shuttle
I know i will need the wiring harness, gps aerial & cable

How would i be able to test it before leaving the scrapyard and essentially getting stuck with scrap :hammerhead:

I know how big of a job it is but if i can keep the costs down it'll be worth it as my radio and CD shuttle need replacing anyways so might as well upgrade but keep the OEM look, will probably record the process of the DIY then

Thanks in advance

Some of the other big costs come in the form of the cables that you need to buy, cause you usually needs to buy them from the dealers... But as far as the hardware is, it looks like you are set, except for the GPS module. I don't know if you can maybe hook up those GPS modules used to turn your cell into a GPS?

Thanks Hellas

I just got a phone call, car is still at the yard, He says it seems as if all cabling is still in and sounds as if he has the Gps module and aerial for an extra R500

I will go check it out this afternoon

I priced a new retrofit cable at BMW, they said its R2878.34, I prefer the getting it out of the donor car if possible

Do you know if i would need to replace that bracket that holds the sunglasses compartment to accommodate the air-con or will it straight fit

Nope, you'll need another bracket. See if you can't get that from the donor car as well. I'd say try to get as much from the donor car as possible, if possible.

Another thing is, when you take out the screen from the donor, see if the air vent ducts behind the head unit has been modified, or if it looks different than yours. Usually a double DIN install comprises of modifying the air ducts behind the head unit.

does the screen flips down for loading cds?

dude make sure you get the donor amp

it's a BM 54 professional -should be silver in colour

sits below the dvd unit - without this -:nono:

no voice prompts
no radio
no sound - pointless

i've been looking for one for ages - Agents want R 5700 + vat :cursin:

Thanks Hellas, I'll see what's in the car and take what I can, will also look at the ducts.

Nawtiboy, yes the screen flips down for the cd's. I'm sure I saw the amp with the other components but I will make double sure, thanks

cool:thumbsup:

without it it is very difficult -just get everything from the back :)

will save you a lot of time

my amp blew :cursin:

- but i managed to fit an aftermarket amp and had to install a pre amp for volume control

i lost radio and voice prompts -otherwise works fine :)

i was looking for the amp for over a year - i gave up :)
