Hi all

I am in the market to buy a 2008/2009 320d.

Let's say the turbo blows - can it be reconditioned or must one buy a new one?

I now what it costs new, but what is the price of an overhaul/recon?

Buy a new one. I think about r12000. But you could take a after market warranty that will cover the turbo.

Just buy it new, the amount you save vs the amount for labour and the risks involved just does not make it worth it. Plus the turbo manufacturer says you should not attempt to rebuild a VNT turbo, but for all the other types, they support rebuilding...

Lol, no. Well, I guess something like a t25 would work. You will have boost for the 3500-4000rpm range only.

Seriously, why would you buy a BMW 3 series and try to cheap-out when you have to replace the turbo? A turbo is like tyres - it wears out, so budget to maintain it like you do with a set of tyres. Only difference is, tyres don't last as long, but they are about the same price.

LOL just asking, is R12000 like the best price. C
is there no other option, I need to start saving then.

R12k is a bargain. It is the labour that will make it expensive. And that price is from the importer, if you try to get the part from the dealer, you will need to start saving just for the vaseline!

i would not try to fix a blown vnt turbo, the only replacement turbine wheels and compressor wheels ect available are non garrett parts (chinese).
garrett refuses to make these parts available , since they do not want vnt turbo's to be reconditioned.(like p1000 said)

do not even think of using a chinese copy of these turbo's , you will be sorry.

original garrett turbo's can however be SERVICED with genuine garrett bearing kits, provided they are in running condition still. (and provided you do not disturb the vnt settings.)

if you have to ask how this is done, you should not be doing it though :)

Have a look in the Car magazine. Turbo Direct, the importers of genuine Garret turbos advertise in there and they sell direct to the public. Bought my new turbo from them last July/August for R8250 plus Vat and had it fitted for R1050 by BMW mechanic after hours. BMW wanted R20 025 for the same turbo!!!
I would not worry too much about the turbo going as the old turbo that came out of my car only had a small piece of the exhaust impeller broken off an it was making a whistling sound when driving. I opened up the turbo on removal and found the internal bearing like new! If i had known that the vane was the only problem i would probably still be driving with the same turbo.

Give Stallion Turbos in Pretoria a call, they very helpfully and also supply OEM turbos at a competitive price.

Hmmm, how about rather going to the importer/distributor for Garrett in SA. I have heard the guys at stallion are a bunch of cowboys.

They gave me some sound advice when I suspected my 330d turbo, it was a blocked CAT causing problems.
But there are are lot of fly by night operators out there, so I do the same as you did and get info from the serious BMW fanatics on the forum.

According to them, the VNT mechanism needs to be calibrated on a precision flow bench, and only the factory can do it properly, or something to that effect.
